Please kill this process through task manager.

C:\Program Files\ACD Systems\ACDSee32\ACDSee32.exe


This is not something that normally runs in the background. Are you running this program?


Download and run Stinger. It should return a small log that you can post here in your next reply.

Thanks for all the help. Yes, I was actually running that program at the time.

In the end, the next time the I tried to reboot after the last message, the computer refused to start completely. I was only able to start in safe mode. So I was forced to save what data I could (I think that I lost relatively little) and re-format with a fresh WinXP installation. And this time, I'm running with CA antivirus rather than Norton.

So thanks again for the help... now, it looks like it's fixed, although fixed the hard way.

Oh, and your help was great, so thanks again!
