I have a friend running a 17" Powerbook G4, she changed her name, and changed it to boot from hard drive, where before it booted from network. She restarted and everything was gone, back to factory settings. She changed it back to boot from network and it was the same thing.

Is the hard drive empty? ... What happened .. ? What can we do .. ?

When she changed her name, the computer thinks she is a new user so the computer is only showing what is available under her new name. Try logging in with the old name and administrator password and see what happens.

If you have another mac u could install OS X on a CD and burn it, then boot of the CD and see what the harddrive has on it, when your messing with a computer you always want to back-up your files first. (the CD may be complicated but If you have an iPod they make great bootible harddrives so you can install OS X on your iPod instead as long as its in disk mode whitch can be done in iTunes > prefs > iPod)
