The C:\Program Files\Microsoft folder opens when any user logs in to XP Home. I have tried the solutions here such as the msconfig and registry ones.

I use all the latest updates to the OS, Antivirus (Norton), software firewall (zonealarm), Lavasoft Ad-Aware (and Ad-Watch) and WebRoot Spy Sweeper. I am meticulous about updates and patches. I regularly also run full checks with Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper, Antivirus, and Registry First Aid.

Any ideas welcome. :tazz:
Thanks in advance,

Hi facman!

Please download HijackThis using the link in my signature and then post the results of a scan in your next post. Doesn't matter which user you are logged into when doing this since they all seem to be doing it.

You have an awful lot of items that startup when your computer does. Does it take a long time for your computer to boot up and become responsive? I'm betting it does. Lets try to remove some of these items and see if your problem doesn't disappear along with them.

Please re-run a scan using Hijackthis and put a check in the box next to each of the following:
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Iomega Startup Options] C:\Program Files\Iomega\Common\ImgStart.exe
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Iomega Drive Icons] C:\Program Files\Iomega\DriveIcons\ImgIcon.exe

The follow items you will have to choose whether or not you need them by viewing the description of what the process is. If you decide you don't really NEED it starting up when your computer does, then put a check in the checkbox next to each item:
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kdx] C:\WINDOWS\kdx\KHost.exe - khost.exe is a secure data delivery application by Kontiki Inc. which delivers data such as images and files to secure servers for sharing.
  • O4 - Global Startup: DataViz Inc Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\DataViz\DvzIncMsgr.exe - DvzIncMsgr.exe is a process associated with Documents To Go from DataViz Inc. Documents To Go is a document management solution for Symbian and Palm OS.
  • O4 - Global Startup: Windows Desktop Search.lnk = C:\Program Files\MSN Toolbar Suite\DS\02.05.0001.1119\en-us\bin\WindowsSearch.exe - WindowsSearch.exe is a process associated with Windows Desktop Search Tray from Microsoft. It is used by the MSN Search Toolbar.

After you have checked these items, click the FIX CHECKED button and hit YES/OK to any messages that appear. Don't worry, HiJackthis makes backups of everything we remove here, so if something should happen to go wrong, though unlikely, you can easily undo the changes made. Now reboot your computer and post back how things are going.

Thanks for the help,

I noticed an entry for MSWorks in your "check to fix". I had deleted that program awhile back. The folder that opens had residual stuff from MSWorks in it, along with other folders.
What should I do about the "fixed" stuff, if anything? Looks like I'll lose auto update checking on some items.

You don't need to do anything about the fixed stuff. As for your comment about losing the ability to auto-update stuff, you really don't need those running all the time. The only auto-update features you should have running are firewall, a/v and spyware. Everything else just uses system resources when they are running and as such slows your computer down.

Btw, have you noticed any kind of speed improvement in your computer booting up/shutting down and just in general?

Speed improvement,
boot - about 2x as fast.
Performance - noticeably better.

Amazing how little stuff creeps in over time.

Your help much appreciated.
