Hi mcpatrick,

Your log looks clean..just couple leftovers, let's fix those:

Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked. Then reboot.

To make sure you're clean, let's run an online scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please post that log along with a new HijackThis log. You have many unnecessary items on startup, would you like to eliminate some of them?

Hi Armodeluxe,
Thank you for getting back to me today. I'm glad to see that I didn't have a virus of some sort. Yes, I would love to get rid of whatever I can to make my computer run more efficiently. It starts up so slow and during transitions in the browser and programs. Please tell me what needs to go. Also, I do know I only use the AIM toolbar and I see many toolbars and such in the list. Here are the 2 logfiles you asked for.

Ok, here are the optionals. First, optional uninstalls, uninstall these from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs if you're not using them.

Yahoo Companion
Viewpoint

Now open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to the ones you like. Note that for some, you will also have to take the extra steps specified.

O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
Intel Graphics Tray.System Tray icon which gets installed with the drivers for onboard VGA cards based on the Intel 81x graphics chipset. Double-clicking on it enables you to quickly change the display resolution, save your current Display Scheme, or configure your onboard graphics card. You can also configure keyboard hotkeys (shortcuts - this is handled by another background task called HKCMD). You can access the same features through the "Intel Graphics Technology" icon in the Control Panel. Although great in theory, on some PCs we have found that whenever IGFXTRAY and HKCMD are running, Windows Explorer is prone to hanging and showing as "not responding" in the Task List. Our recommendation, therefore, is that you should not have this tray icon running, and that you should also not use the hotkey facility that comes with it.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BCMSMMSG] BCMSMMSG.exe BCM voicemodem driver. Required for dial-up if you have one of these modems, not needed on high speed
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StorageGuard] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r StorageGuard from Veritas (this version by Sonic). Free utility that integrates with Backup MyPC (formerly Backup Exec Desktop), Simple Backup and MS Backup. Provides system tray access and background monitoring - warning you of files that haven't recently been backed up. Required unless you backup manually on a regular basis or have scheduled backups
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime Apple’s QuickTime Tray Icon which enables you to start QuickTime from the System Tray (from version 5 onward). Given the extremely simple functionality of this Tray icon, it is a totally unreasonable resource hog - it has been measured to use as much as 1.5Mb of memory at times. To disable it - Start QuickTime through "Start \ Programs", choose the "Edit \ Preferences" menu option, select "QuickTime Preferences" from the right-hand side menu, uncheck the box next to QuickTime System Tray icon. In version 6, however, this is done differently : double-click on the QuickTime icon in the Control Panel to bring up the QuickTime Settings panel, choose Browser Plug-in in the drop-down at the top, and then uncheck QuickTime System Tray icon. You can always start QuickTime through "Start Programs" or through double-clicking on a quicktime file.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Once , it runs independently of RealOne Player. On many PCs realsched slows down boot-ups unacceptably, using up to 90% of CPU time at times. To disable "tkbellexe" (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe This program is installed by MusicMatch Jukebox and enables you to access MusicMatch from the System Tray. If you like the feature, keep it. Otherwise disable the Tray feature in MusicMatch Jukebox.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe This task is provided purely to allow MusicMatch Jukebox to still be able to detect the insertion or removal of a CD on PCs where the CD-ROM drives are not set to Auto-Play ( “Auto-insert notification” not turned ON in Win9x/ME, or “Autorun” registry key setto Zero in WinNT4/2000/XP). If you know that your PC automatically plays or opens CDs, then, as part of streamlining your PC’s environment, you may try disabling this task. If you find that MusicMatch Jukebox is still able to detect the insertion or removal of a CD, then all is well, otherwise simply re-enable this task.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe "HP's exclusive Share-to-Web software makes it easy to share content with others through our affiliate Internet websites." In other words an application that allows users to upload scanned images to their personal webpages if desired. Available via Start -> Programs
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe Viewpoint_Manager - automatic updates for ViewPoint products such as ViewPoint Media Player (as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve, etc). Can be run manually via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel by enabling auto-updates temporarily, re-booting and then disabling again
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain WildTangent on-line games related; not required for the games to work.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe" Checks the internet for updated drivers/utilities for your HP product - update manually
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHmon06] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon06.exe Related to the Hewlett Packard software HP Photosmart printer, it provides easy access to flash card reading functions. This program is not essential to the running of the system. Your choice.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\VERIZO~1\VERIZO~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe System tray icon for the Virtual Assistant from Verizon , used to communicate internet problems via the network rather than telephone. Available via desktop shortcut or Start -> Programs - not required
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe Microsoft Works 2002 PictureIt! update detector. Another auto-update feature that you should turn off ! If you are not convinced, then this from a Microsoft document should convince you : "You may notice that when this feature runs your computer may freeze or the program may try to update itself.... You may also notice that the computer will try to dial your Internet Service Provider, connect to the Internet, and download any updates." Turn the feature off. (1) Open PictureIt!. (2) Open a picture. (3) Choose the Tools \ Options menu option. (4) Clear the "Check for updates online" option. (5) Close PictureIt!.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe HP software updates. If a shortcut doesn't exist, create your own and run it manually.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl As a startup item it is down to end user preference. If you do not want AOL Instant Messenger started automatically, or if you do not use it at all and only have it there because it was installed by default when you installed AOL, then open AOL Instant Messenger and configure the preferences so that it does not start with Windows.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background Down to end-user preference. If you do not want MSN Messenger to start in your System Tray every time Windows boots up, do as follows : go into the “Tools \ Options \ Preferences” menu option within Messenger and uncheck “Run when Windows starts”.
O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe System Tray access to HP Director. Required if you prefer to use the all-in-one buttons to manually scan documents or transfer photos from a camera, for example

If you disable it, HP Image Zone takes a long time to start up only the first time you run it. Subsequent startups are much faster than the first time

If you remove the Verizon Online Support Center in the add/remove program some help menus in help and support will not be available. You decide

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Armodeluxe,

Ok. I "fixed" some of the files that you listed and kept others that I use. Do you want me to "fix" the ones I disabled from the directions? It wasn't clear to me. I disabled musicmatch but couldn't find the "autorun" registry key- don't even know where to look for it. I don't know how to make a shortcut to HP to manually update software or disable the HP Image Zone Fast Start-couldn't find where to go in HP Image Zone. I'm not that computer savy! But I'm learning!!!
Also, my computer is still not rebooting like it has in the past.
Thanks!

These are the three that I couldn't figure out:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe

Fix that one in HijackThis. If you find that MusicMatch Jukebox is still able to detect the insertion or removal of a CD, then all is well, otherwise simply restore it from HijackThis backups:

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on "View the list of Backups"
  • Place a check mark next to the items you want to restore
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

To make a shortcut, locate the file and right click on it. Then select Send To > Desktop(create shortcut)
After that, fix it in HijackThis.

O4 - Global Startup: HP Image Zone Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe

Just fix it in HijackThis.

Run the full service scan on this page and follow the instructions there to improve performance..
