The issue I am seeing is upon start up of XP, a pop-up box appears. The title part of the pop-up read "Install" with the red 'X' in the upper right corner. The text of the pop-up reads "Could not communicate to the network server, error 1." The pop-up includes an Abort and Retry key.

I can choose abort, but when I start Internet explorer, it loads my home page, but it hangs once I try to navigate anywhere else.

Norton firewall has asked me to block connections from the following files before following the instructions before posting:
sys*.exe (where * is about a 10-15 digit number)
CLEANexp.exe
GLB7.tmp

Upon reboot, just the folowing appeared:
win*.exe (where * is about a 10-15 digit number)

If I end the following processes from the task manager, then I can use explorer again:
sys*.exe
win*.exe
sys98.exe

After I start using explorer, then I get lots of pop-ups!

I could use some help in removing the pop up message, and getting explorer working again. Right now I'm using Mozilla Firefox.

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Thanks for the reply. Since posting, I reviewed some other posts and ran the following program: Dr. Web CureIT!

This has appeared to correct the initial pop up window that I mentioned. now the sys*.exe and win*.exe appear to be gone, but now I have ms*.exe (where the * is a long random number). I'm also thinking the bxxs5 is also a problem.

Thanks again for your help

Please print or save these instructions for use in safe mode.

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Please update Ewido (do NOT run it yet!)
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
  • After the updates are installed, exit Ewido
Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
O2 - BHO: CExtension Object - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode:

Please delete these files in bold: (if found)

C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsp5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZQInContextactx1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ms033849082134.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

If Cleanup! asks if you want to reboot, click NO

Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
Reboot back to normal mode.

Go here to make an online scan:

http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Then please post a new HijackThis log along with Ewido log and Panda results. Do you still have popups now?

Armodeluxe,

I appreciate the help and information. I followed your instructions, and do not see anymore pop-ups! Nor do I see the win, sys, or ms.exe type files in the task manager. As you requested, I've attached a new HiJackThis log, Ewido log, and Panda results. Please let me know if anything else looks suspect.

Again, your help is so appreciated. Please keep up the great work.

You are getting too many spyware cookies. Most of them are third party cookies that can be blocked. That won't prevent you from getting all, but will reduce the amount significantly.

In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies

Click the small triangle next to cookies to expand that tab and put a check next to "for the originating website only". This will prevent third party cookies from being installed on your computer.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and click on Advanced in the Privacy tab

Now put a check next to "Override automatic cookie handling"

Set first party cookies to Accept and third party cookies to Block

Also put a check to "Always allow session cookies" OK your way out.

Your log looks clean now.

Now let's reset your restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

Now you should go get a firewall. Don't rely on the Windows firewall as it monitors only incoming traffic. Pick one of these, they are all free.
Kerio
Zonealarm
Sygate

I'll also recommend you to install a monitoring software which will monitor certain areas on your computer and will place alerts when those are being modified. One such software I'll recommend is Prevx, but it's for advanced users as the messages it displays can be hard to decipher. One other similar but more user friendly software is Winpatrol. Both are free programs.
Winpatrol
Prevx

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates. You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE

A good article to read:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

I wonder how you got infected again by the exactly same infection..I would guess a page you are frequenting might be doing that..also how many user accounts do you have on the computer? If there is more than one, please post a log from each account seperately stating which log belongs to which account..

Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

O2 - BHO: CExtension Object - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll
O2 - BHO: wb - {55BE9F0D-6CAF-4c3e-B125-5A13A8C9D0EC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsf6.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxxs5] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll,DllRun
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [win32088213438490] C:\WINDOWS\win32088213438490.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [win32070821343849] C:\WINDOWS\win32070821343849.exe

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Update Ewido and then boot into safe mode.

Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsf6.dll
C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\win32088213438490.exe
C:\WINDOWS\win32070821343849.exe

Then run first Cleanup and then make a scan with Ewido. Save the Ewido report. Boot back to normal mode.

Now let's run a more comprehensive scan than Panda, bewarned, this one will take like 3-4 hours on average..

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Then please post a log from each account, Ewido log and Kaspersky results..

Armodeluxe,

I do have two accounts; one for the kids and one for myself and my wife.

I followed your instructions against the "parents" account. Here is the HiJack This log from that account:

I noticed now that I logged back into the "parents" account, the win*.exe process is running there too (post the logs posted above). If one of the recomendations is to have only one account, I can live with that. It's never been a problem until now. One other note: when I log into safe mode, I can only log in as "administrator" or "parents" account. I can not log into the "kids" account.

Thanks again for sticking with this.

Please print these instructions.

You can't login to kids' account in safe mode because it is a limited account..go to Control Panel user accounts and make the kids' account administrator..then login to kids'..in kids':

Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: CExtension Object - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll
O2 - BHO: wb - {55BE9F0D-6CAF-4c3e-B125-5A13A8C9D0EC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nst2911.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxxs5] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll,DllRun

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ZQInContextactx1.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZQInContextactx1.exe

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Then immediately switch users to parents' account and fix the same entries if present.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next boot into safe mode in parents'

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Then delete these files and folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\msw
C:\Program Files\17q8j6mc
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Cache\desktrf-fran-162813.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fran-super.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ventbb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nst2911.dll
C:\WINDOWS\win32054908213438.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Setup75.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZQInContextactx1.exe

While still in safe mode, run HijackThis and check if any of the entries are present, if so fix them. Still in safe mode switch users to kids' and check for the entries in there too..

Then make one more scan with Ewido and save the log.

Switch users back to parents and run Ewido there too and save the log...(maybe this is overkill but I want to make sure)

Please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log from both accounts, both Ewido logs, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder. Change the kids' account back to limited.

Looks like we cleaned it up.. :tazz:

Here's some interesting reading material for you...

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7735192/

http://forums.thatco...showtopic=13434

What I will suggest is, please download Firefox..and let the kids use only that, cause IE is too vulnerable..

Visit the extensions page for Firefox and get the Adblock extension..then go to the sites the kids frequent yourself, and block all the ads on those pages..that wouldn't prevent every infection but hopefully would reduce the risk somewhat..

Yep, its been working great today. I'm assuming we're good (for now that is).

Armodeluxe - thanks so much for your help, and for the advice in the last post.

Have a great holiday weekend!
