[SIZE=1][FONT=Courier]I've ran my spyway and my adware programs and was able to clean up my computer in those respects. now, here's where the program comes....when i run my McAfee anti-virus program, there are five programs that i wish to delete...but the program can't delete them, quarantine them, or even clean them b/c everytime it's either "disk-write protected" or "cannot be deleted".

I even tried searching for these files myself and deleting them, but can't b/c it says "the source file may be in use"....BUT I'M NOT RUNNING ANY OTHER PROGRAMS!!!!...I CAN'T FIGURE THIS OUT! Why can't I delete these files/programs or whatever they are???

The anti-virus programs labels them as "potentially unwanted programs". Are these a serious threat, and even if they're not...how can I remove them? This is what came up:

I would recommend uninstalling Spyware Stormer. It is considered a rogue program.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

• Automatically save log-file
• Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
• Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

• Scan Within Archives
• Scan Active Processes
• Scan Registry
• Deep Scan Registry
• Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
• Scan my Hosts file
• Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
• All of your hard drives

-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

• Include additional process information
• Include additional file information
• Include environment information
• Include additional object details

-> Click the Tweak button and select:

• Under the Scanning Engine:
  • Unload recognized processes during scanning
  • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
• Under the Cleaning Engine:
  • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

• Use Custom Scanning Options

-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

i did all the steps, thankz for the advice by the way , but i'm still having the original problem. i still can't seem to delete or get rid of these .CAB files whatever they are. they're still coming up on my McAfee Anti-Virus program as potentially unwanted programs....i can't delete em, clean em, or even quarantine them. what should i do?

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version and always go online and update it before you run it).

How to use Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in

- Close Ad-Aware 6 and Ad-Watch (if running)
- Download the free VX2 Cleaner at http://updates.ls-se...lvx2cleaner.exe
- Install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware 6
- Go to "Plug-ins"
- Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Plugin"
- If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".


If your computer is infected

- Select "Clean system"
- Reboot your computer
- Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
- Remove any VX2 objects detected
- Reboot your computer again
- Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Reboot your PC.

The anti-virus programs labels them as "potentially unwanted programs".  Are these a serious threat, and even if they're not...how can I remove them?  This is what came up:

C:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVE\FS593.CAB
C:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVE\FS617.CAB
C:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVE\FS552.CAB

I must be missing something here, but these *.cab files appear to be the files that Win ME archieves for its restore points. I wouldn't worry about what the anti-virus programs says as it's only letting you know a "Potential" problem, which these can be if the restore point(s) contains any viruses/spyware at the time.

I use several anti-virus programs and one, ClamWin, found a problem in one of my ME's restore CABs and quarantined it. At present, my C:\_RESTORE folder hasn't got much in it as I used Spybot's Search and Destroy's Secure File Shredder and shredded everything in it (20 times). Made a new restore point afterwards. Shredder is great for dragging and dropping the entire Windows\Temporary Internet Files into it. Use it for infected e-mail, too.

If you want to make sure you are seeing ALL your files, click Start>Contol Panel>Folders Options. Select "View" tab, and under "Hidden files and folders" check "Show hidden files and folders". Find "Hide file extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files"...uncheck these. Hopefully, you'll be able to see all files. May have to reboot to take effect. Don't remember. Otherwise you can try viewing files from DOS. Restore folder options to originals once done.

Like the avatar. Have you tried disabling, and then renabling System Restore? This will clear your restore points, and should stop your warnings.

hey thankz for the advice to coach's wife and Ron! I recently downloaded a great spyware and adware program and searched my system thoroughly and found nothing infected, i guess these "potentially unwanted programs" are not a big deal since it's not effecting my system in any way....i just thought i'd delete them just in case...but i decided just to ignore them for now.
