Hello gilbates2 and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated including Spy Sheriff. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Temporary Folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Spy Sweeper from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

Download NoahDfear's smitRem.exe©. and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark or tick next to each of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Longhorn SideBar] C:\WINDOWS\SideBar\SideBar.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Shell] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

Click Fix checked

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\SideBar\ - folder
c:\secure32.html - file
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe -file

Open the smitRem.exe©. folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know if any problems persist.

thank you for your reply crusty :tazz: ,

i`m going to get told off here but i kinda went and done some stuff myself from another thread so havent followed your lead to the letter but most of it have :)

before your reply i installed ewido and went to safe mode ran it in full scan and deleted alot of spyware , it took a very long time as i have nearly a Tb of storage space which takes along time to scan . so i didnt run a full scan in the order u asked instead i ran a quick scan which stil took 20 mins , i have also had problems running panda which stops scanning on ntdll.dll , it just stops on this file

i should also add that the longhorn sidebar is ok and i need that as its part of a longhorn face lift that is installed

apart from these probs here are my log files

Hello again Mike

There was a definite spysheriff infection on the previous HJT log which has not appeared in the Smitrem log. The fresh HJT log you have posted has either been created in safe mode, or you have a real problem. Please post a fresh HJt log from normal mode and I'll take a fresh look.

My understamding of the Quickscan option in Ewido is that it does a memory, registry, cookie and Windows folder scan only. If I look quickly at the previous HJT log, that scan would have missed 3 of the 4 files I saw for deletion.

I scan 3 times a week with Ewido in addition to twice daily scans with AV and AS. My Ewido is normally 45 minutes which I think is OK, my son's takes over an hour and that's OK too. If we have to do a MWAV, it will take over 3 hours, but it will be thorough.

Can I suggest an overnight Ewido scan?

The problem with Panda is strange, a lot of people have the same problem in exactly the same place.

Here's a link to the Sidebar file in startup: http://www.bleepingc...debar-4933.html

I'll wait for your fresh HJT log.

blimey crusty i thought the sidebar was part of the longhorn look , its very nice and a shame to kill it but if its spyware it will defo have to go , odd coz it uses all the same settings as the longhorn transformation pack including different longhorn colours and settings ...such a shame

anyway as it happens i have just completed a full scan and its just finished and i also include a HJT log with xp running in normal

i have just closed the sidebar and windows error reporting tool showed prjdeskbar has a problem and needs to close is this spyware then m8 ??

Hello again

The fresh log looks good with the exception of sidebar which I recommend deleting, but it is your PC. I have just compared the first and last HJT logs with each other and fail to see why some lines were removed in the running processes.

Here's the adjustment.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Longhorn SideBar] C:\WINDOWS\SideBar\SideBar.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder, and delete it:

C:\WINDOWS\SideBar\

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

A fresh HJT log please for checking. Is all still OK?

Thanks Crusty , sorry for the late reply , i have done some searching and digging on the prjdeskbar i use and tbh i`m happy with it , i have seen who wrote it and where its from and have no probs using it , i have protowall running and it has not detected any untoward activity , plus i now have coverage by the other software you recomended on top of what i already had , i did try another deskbar but it didnt look half as decent as this version , so i will politely pass on the rest of your recomendations sir

thank you very much for your excellent help with the removal of spysherrif , i have been in contact with others who have had it and were not so lucky as me , they eventualy had to format and start again

your help is most appreciated , all the best to you and everyone involved with this site

for now hopefully for good :tazz: i bid u farewell
