Need help with gebcb.dll [RESOLVED]

The analysis of your last log in addition to the information gleaned from your other posts lead me to believe that your only problem, and it isn't really a problem, is that the infected file is in your Norton Quarantine as it should be.

If you want to get rid of it from there, you can find the instructions on emptying the Quarantine Folder on the Symantec site. These instructions are version specific so choose the one that matches your version of Norton.

If you are unsure of the procedure to follow, Norton provide's an excellent step-by-step tutorial which can be found: HERE

Once you have finished emptying the Quarantine, please rerun Norton as well as HijackThis and post the results into this thread. Please tell me how it went.

Hi Trevuren....I have Nortons 2002 so their site gives me no info. so I just went to the quauantine box, highlighted the infection and deleted it. Ran Nortons, only took 30 minutes, usually it takes an hr??? It came back clean, and here is the Hijack report:

Hopefully this is it for me, I am TESTED out...... :tazz: If everything is ok, now I need to go and try and remove all the stuff I downloaded, some I know is in add/remove, but think other's are in Desktop. Do I just find the stuff in Desktop and delete it? I'll keep Hijack, but the rest is going, and could U please recommend a good spyware thing to use? I tried Ad Aware and Spybot, didn't like either, it slowed my machine down, and it never seemed to catch anything anyway. Right now I have Nortons 2002, a firewall, Microsoft with service pk. 2, which I check daily to make sure it is up to date.

Once again, I thank U and Cretemonster a MILLION times over for the fast help. If I win lotto anytime soon, I will definitely send the 2 of U on a vacation, I'm sure U could use it..... :)

Your log is clean. Ewido and SpySweeper are also good. Remember they all come with a "Guard" function that runs in the background if you don't disable them, thus slowing down your machine. Any of "our" programs that aren't in Add/Remove can just be deleted and you will be fine.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Thanx sooooo much again for the help. Hope I don't have to visit with any problems for a looooong while, but who knows, these things have a mind of their own.

I did the things U told me to, the restore thing gave me a lil fright, as when I disabled it I got a warning, then when I enabled it, it took a few seconds, but it is fine now. Will look into one of those spyware programs, as I know a friend downloaded one this site recommended, think it was Spywareguard, but will double check with her.

Yes, I visit Microsoft each day, so far it tells me I am up to date, I even look at my past history to make sure it took, as once it canceled itself out, but then did it again the next day. Tonight I will check to see where everything is and get rid of alot of stuff except Hijack.

Once again, THANX to yourself and Cretemonster for such fast answers and all the help. If I don't get here with a problem before the holidays, and hopefully I won't, please be sure and enjoy them.
