My computer has been running a lot slower (either 100 or close to 100% CPU usage) lately.

My computer, which I am running Windows XP Home on, will freeze sometimes with any given program, and when I do ctrl + alt + delete to end program... it will not end the program! It has never done this beore, and it is really annoying. Then when I go to Start - Turn off Computer....... it will not turn off! The only way I can shut the computer down is to manually press the power button, and I have done this way too many times.

I have done the other steps that I am supposed to do before posting the HiJackThis log and have now decided to post the log. I do use spybot and NoAdware frequently. I also use Norton Internet Security which includes Antivirus.

Here it is:

Hi Nschlenvogt, Welcome to GTG !! :tazz:
Sorry for the delay in reviewing your post !

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

Since it has been so long, lets begin by downloading and running a few programs to help clean things up :

Download and Install Ewido Security Suite© by Ewido Networks
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck :

"Install background guard"
"Install scan via context menu"

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click Update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Close Ewido when updates finish

Download and Install CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Run Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE:During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**See Below**

**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Close Ewido Security Suite

Run CCleaner
SETUP
DO NOT USE THE ISSUES TAB!!!!
Open CCleaner
Options, Advanced: Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" (for cleaning malware files!)

Options, Settings: Check "Run CCleaner when system starts" (optional)
Options, Settings: Check "Add 'Run Cleaner' option to Recycle Bin context menu" (optional)

To clean your machine, it is highly recommended that you clean the following directory contents (but not the directory folder):

Options>CustomFolders>Add Folder>Navigate to these folders (click on bold folder once and hit OK) :
(Depending on Operating System and/or Browser, some of the following folders may not be present)
* C:\Windows\Temp
* C:\Windows\Prefetch
* C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\cookies
* C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\localsettings\Temp
* C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\localsettings\Temporary Internet Files
* C:\Program Files\Firefox\Profiles\<user>\<num>\Cache
* C:\Program Files\Opera\Cache4
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.)
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Firefox\Profiles\<user>\<num>\Cache
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Cookies
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Cookies
Hit OK
In left pane, scroll down to "Advanced, Custom Folders", put a check in Custom Folders
Then click on Run Cleaner
Put check in box to not show message again.
It will automatically clean.

Close out CCleaner

Please run ONE of these Online Virus Scans :

TrendMicro Housecall
Note: you must use Internet Explorer, other browsers will not work.
Under "Scan your PC", please click Scan now. It's free!
Select your location and click the Go button.
Click the red magnifying glass button.
Select Complete Scan.
Please be patient while Housecall downloads.
Please allow the ActiveX Control and when prompted click install
Put a check next to My Computer
Leave the following checked:
Scan for Spyware
Check security vulnerabilities

Click the Next button.
It will download the latest scan engine and pattern files.
When the definitions have been downloaded, the scan will start.
After it's done scanning it will take you to the summary page.
Click the Next button.
Click the drop-down to choose delete or remove on each bad guy found, if you receive a prompt click OK.
Click the Next button to move onto the recovery (final) portion of the scan.
After everything has been removed, please click the show button on everything.
Highlight all the of text and press CTRL + C to copy the text.

OR

Kaspersky WebScanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan:
Select My Computer

Then the program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.

Reboot, run HijackThis and post a fresh HijackThis Log, the Ewido Log, and the Virus Scan Log here

Thank You !!

Hi... I have a bit of a problem with your instructions. When I download Ewido and try to do the updates... it sits at 0% and does nothing. I even tried reinstalling it, and it does not work. I think I had tried using it in the past, and I couldn't get it to work then either.

But I did do the rest of the things you told me to.

Here is my new HiJack This Log:

***After doing the Kaspersky online scan.... I deleted the files in the Norton Antivirus Quarantine, but I did not delete the other files because I think they are registry files, and I don't know how to do that. Are you going to tell me how to get rid of those next? Thanks

Please let me know what else to do!

I am still having problems with my computer restarting..... sometimes when I go to Start-->Turn Off Computer
-->Restart/shut down, the computer doesn't do anything.... just sits there. Also while I was doing the kaspersky scan... my North Antivirus kept popping up and saying Virus found, automatically deleted... and things like that.

Your log is CLEAN !! :tazz:

How is your Shutdown problem now??

Did the Shutdown problem start before or after you installed Norton??

Do you have more than 1 account on this PC ??

Go to Start, ControlPanel, Add/Remove Programs
Uninstall : (if present)

Weatherbug

Now will can remove those items Kaspersky found:

**Turn off System Restore**
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab.
Check "Turn off System Restore"
Click Apply, then click OK and Reboot

**Turn ON System Restore**
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check "Turn off System Restore"
Click Apply, then click OK and Reboot

Let me know if that solves your problem !!

If not tell me any messages you get when you try to Shutdown !!

Hi

I turned off system restore, rebooted, and turned back on like you said. I had to manually press the power button to restart my computer though...

Yes I am still having problems with restarting. If I were to turn off my computer and turn it back on manually with the power button... then when it starts back up, and I went to Start>Shut Down it WOULD work. It's like something I am doing during the use of my computer is making it not want to shut down. If any program freezes or I have any type of trouble whatsoever with my computer, that is when it won't restart. The computer will restart fine if nothing like that has happened though.

There aren't any messages that come up when I try to restart. It just doesn't do anything at all. I can still use the computer just fine though. When it does this... cntl + alt +delete also does not work. Just thought I'd let you know that incase it will help you think of something.

To answer your questions.. I am the only user of my computer, there is only one account. The restart problem started happening AFTER I got Norton Internet Security.... but I have had that for quite a while now, and this problem just came up recently. Also, I didnt not uninstall Weather Bug because it is not present. I had it about a year ago and no longer have it.

Besides this... my computer seems like it is a faster, so thank you!!!!

OH... ALSO.. Did the turning off/on system restore get rid of those files that Kaspersky found? How did it do this? If not.... could you tell me how to get rid of them... because I think they were registry files, and I don't know how to do that.

Is there any way we can get rid of the party poker and konfabulator stuff that is shown in my HJT? i dont even have party poker installed & konfabulator was a program i had but no longer have.

I will post another HJT log just incase you need it. Thank you

It's like something I am doing during the use of my computer is making it not want to shut down. If any program freezes or I have any type of trouble whatsoever with my computer, that is when it won't restart. The computer will restart fine if nothing like that has happened though

Are you having programs freeze??
If so, what programs??

Those files were in your System Restore folder. When you Stop System restore, and reboot it purges all the restore pints in the folder. When you restart it is ready again. This is good reading on this :
System Restore Facts

Look in Add/Remove Programs again and uninstall : (if present)

Konfabulator
PartyPoker

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put a check mark in the boxes, only next to these following items : (if present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - Startup: Konfabulator.lnk = C:\Program Files\Pixoria\Konfabulator\Konfabulator.exe

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)

Click Fix Checked

Open Windows Explorer, locate and Delete the following folders in BOLD : (if present)

C:\Program Files\Pixoria
C:\Program Files\PartyPoker

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log

I want to get the log done then we can work on the Shutdown issue !!

I'm not really sure how to explain the freezing problem. I would say there are certain programs I have used that the program itself wil freeze, and I can't click on anything that has to do with that program (it doesn't respond) but I could still continue to use the rest of my computer. By the way, when I say I could not restart my computer or shut down, I am talking about all of the options (shut down, restart, switch users, log off user, hibernate).

There are just certain things that will happen and I can tell that my computer is at that state where control alt delete isn't going to work nor is it going to restart. For example... that Konfabulator program that I had before, the reason I got rid of it is because there was a link on the main screen of the program that said "Let's get started" or something close to that, and when I would click on it, the program would freeze. Then from that point, cntrl alt delete would not work and I couldnt not shut down/restart/log off user/switch users my computer.

After following the instructions on your last post, I went to restart, and it would not. This I think is because my computer had been asleep rather than shut down for about the last day. If I wake my computer if from sleep and try to shut down it most likely will not.

When I go to shut dow, the "End Now" screen comes up, the one with the process bar and also has a cancel button on it.... (it's the screen you would see if you were to do cntrl alt delete and tell it to "End" a certain program... that screen that would come up that would give you a chance to cancel it, I hope you know what I'm talking about) that screen comes up for about a second and then goes away, and the computer just sits there. (That is when I try to shut down)

After following your instructions I restarted the computer manually by turning it off and on by pressing the power button. Now that I just restarted it that way, if I were to go to Shut Down now, it would work. I hope you see what I am trying to say... it's like something during the use of the computer is making it not shut down, or also letting the computer hibernate like I mentioned before.

By the way this computer is a HP Pavillion laptop if that makes any difference.

Thank you!

Your log is CLEAN !! :tazz:

Sounds like the Hibernate or Sleep function isn't totally coming out of that state.
When you wake it up does it matter if you wait a few seconds before you Shutdown??

You might have to wait a bit after it wakes up for everything to get back to normal!
Will it not Shutdown after Sleep or Hibernate only??

Try shutdown.
The start up the PC
Let it finish booting and the desktop is up and you do not hear the HardDrive running or see the Hourglass curcor.
When you are sure that it is booted, go to Start, Shutdown, restart
See if it restarts !!

Hi,

I do wait for it to boot up all the way before tryiing to shut down/restart. I am not sure exactly what triggers it to do this... I guess I'm still trying to figure it out. But when it won't shut down or restart, cntl alt delete also does not work??? The task manager does not even come up. So there is no way I can turn off the computer without manually using the power button.

Trying to shut down/restart after waking up from hibernate is just one of the times I have noticed that it does not work. Also if I have any type of "problem" with a program, then it also will not restart/shut down. It's like it is not propperly ending programs as I close them... and when I go to shutdown/restart the End Program box comes up for a splint second and then goes away, like something is still running, but then it never does anything. I guess I don't expect you to fix my problem if I can't even tell you when it is doing this, but I'm still trying to figure out what causes it do to this. Do you have any suggestions at all? Thanks!!
If I never fix it, is it going to hurt my computer to keep turning it off manually without Shutting it Down?

WOULD IT HELP TO POST AN HJT LOG WHEN THE COMPUTER IS AT THE STAGE WHERE IT WILL NOT SHUT DOWN? THEN IT WILL SHOW YOU ALL THE PROCESSES AND EVERYTHING RUNNING? JUST A THOUGHT... LET ME KNOW.

Nikki

Yes eventually that will harm the PC!!
If you could try to catch a glimpse of what program is wanting to "EndTask" that would help !
I know it is up only for a second but sounds like you know when it will appear.
It will have the name near the "LEFT" corner at top

Lets try another approach :
Try this first :
turn off outgoing mail scanning in Norton Internet Security ( See if that lets you Shutdown)
Norton Internet Security firewall options->programs and remove your mail program, if any, then see if that works

Open HijackThis

Click on Config... button on bottom right

Click on Misc Tools

In the Startup List section at top check :

List also minor sections (full)
List empty sections (complete)

Click on Generate StartupList Log

Answer yes and Copy the entire contents of the Notepad file and Paste it here

Here is an example of what it is doing:

As I was reading your last post I also opened Pacific Poker from the desktop. It told me that I had to update before I could play. So I clicked on update and waited for it to finish. As soon as it was done, it brought me back to the login screen.

Over the login screen they have a like progress bar type of thing that comes up while it is trying to connect to their server. I also had an hour glass over this. It never did connect to their server, and I have had this happen before so I think it is their server and not my computer. (This is not the only program I have had freeze either).

So after waiting a few minutes I did cntl alt delete, and by Pacific Poker it said Not Responding. I clicked on End Task to Pacific Poker, and it doesn't do anything. I have had this happen before. No matter how many times I go to End Task or try to the close the program that is frozen, it just sits there, and I am unable to do anything but manually turn off my computer with the power button.

I tried going to Start>Shut down.. didn't do anything (as I knew it would, like I said before, when a program is frozen or something "goes wrong" while using my computer, it is not going to shut down).

Then while Pacific poker was sitting there not doing anything, I decided to go into Control panel to uninstall Norton Security Center because from the way it sounds, you think it may have something to do with my problem, and also I have thought about getting rid of it in the past because it always says "Attention" by Norton Antivirus in Norton Security Center, but when I click On Norton Antivirus, it says everything is fine.

Anway, I tried opening up control panel while Pacific Poker was still sitting there frozen, and a message popped up that said something like "Could not start client because the system is shutting down". (So it is trying to shut down, but it can't because it won't End the program that is not responding... which is directly related to what I said about trying to End Task on Pacific Poker but it wouldn't).

Then after I got that popup message, it actually started to shut down! It only got to the blue screen that said "Logging off..." and stayed there for a really long time, so I turned it off manually.

So to answer your question, what does the End Now screen say it is trying to end? I think it will say whatever program is not responding. But then there are times when that screen comes up (End now, for a splint second) When i am trying to shut down and I did NOT have a program freeze while using the computer. I don't have programs freeze a lot. As for those times when nothing had frozen, I will have to try really hard to nice what program it says because it comes up and goes away extremely fast.

I am going to uninstall Norton Internet Security after I post this and download a free virus protector. What program would you recommend I use?

THANKS

The Startup List shows nothing unusual!
I dont necessarily think Norton Security is causing the problem, but shutdown problems tend to involve Norton Internet Security! sometimes

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and keeping your system clean !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted site zone in IE.

CCleaner© by CCleaner.com is a good app to clean out temp files, cookies, recent folder(win2000) and Prefetch folder(XP), etc

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft Scans your system for spyware and other threats
a˛ Scanner© by Emsi Software : Scans for Malware and Trojans on your system.

Good Free Antivirus Programs:
AVG© by Grisoft
Avast© by ALWIL Software
NOTE:Remember always have just 1 antivirus program running at a time. Having more than one running causes a conflict between the programs !! You can use one as a backup to run manually

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on " internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
2 very good Firewalls:
Sygate Personal Firewall© by Sygate, Inc
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs

These next steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness.
Alternative Browsers:
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

Java Plug-in© Sun Microsystems. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the HijackThis folder if everything is working okay.

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??
