Hi all--I read all the advice on what to install, etc. before posting with ad/spyware problems, but I've a suspicion that I'm going to have to reinstall Windows on my computer and I don't want to do all that stuff only to find I've got to reinstall, so I figure I'll run this by you first, and see if you advise reinstalling Windows or if it sounds like things can be cleaned up.

Noticed one day last week that my Norton icon in the toolbar was "x"ed out. Clicked on it and received the message, "Norton disabled, you will have to uninstall and reinstall Norton."--or something to that effect. (If I recall, norton had picked up and deleted a Troj Agent AE virus a few days prior)

Day after that, a thousand "adult" emails were sent from my son's SN, and AOL closed down my account (which I resolved).

I immediately downloaded Adaware SE, and it picked up about 400 things that I quarantined and deleted. Then I decided that I didh't want to use Norton anymore, that I would download AOL's free McAfee AV--clicked on the button---nothing. Won't install. I've been using Trend Micro in the meantime--which, by the way, picked up two variations of those "Troj Agent" viruses. I followed instructions to delete these viruses, but none of the keys they indicated were in my registry (although it sure looked like a lot of other junk was).

I also found that I can't play most of my internet games--click on the buttons and nothing happens. Also, I can't take news polls or watch most news videos--nothing loads up. (SOME things load up, but I can't tell the difference between those that do and those that don't). All active X and java things are enabled.

Oh, I also, as a last resort, decided to use the XP system restore. Won't load. Click on it and nothing happens.

I think that some kind of virus or worm got in and corrupted some important system files. I don't know enough to really understand this, but does it look like I need to reinstall windows? And should I attempt it, or call in a pro?

Thanks!

Okay, I did all the scans, and my hijack file is copied below. Ran into a LOT of trouble running all the scans.

1. After every step, adaware keeps asking me to update--although I did update first thing.

2. My spybot scanned and then when I went to fix, it said it was missing files and could not fix, and that I should uninstall and reinstall. With much trouble (I had to try several different download sites to find one that would work) I was able to download a new Spybot, but it would not let me download the DSO Exploit patch, and I did have several instances of that. After reinstalling, same thing happened. It picked up about a dozen items, but was unable to fix because of missing files. Lots of missing files. The first two were WDENGINE.dll and msjava.dll, and a whole lot more.

3. AVG--could download program, but not updates. Clicked on updates and nothing happened--no messages, nothing. Ran scan anyway and it picked up 10 viruses (6 Trojan.StubbyC and 4 Dropper Agent AE) but could only fix 7.

4. Trend Micro found nothing.

5. Could not SAVE Hijackthis--would not allow that option--clicked on button and nothing happened. Could only run it from temp file. Here it is--

THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES FOR ANY HELP OR ADVICE YOU CAN OFFER!!!

Will do when I get back home to that computer--but I have two questions--and I'm so sorry to be so clueless:

1. I have a DSL connection. The only way I know to go offline is to switch off the modem and restart. Is there any other way?

2. I could NOT save HijackThis--it would only allow me to run it from temp--how can I do that offline?

Thanks so much!

You can just unplug the DSL modem cable from your computer, or turn the power off.

2. I could NOT save HijackThis--it would only allow me to run it from temp--how can I do that offline?

We'll work without a net. :tazz:

Whew. This is stressful. HJT file below. Okay, SOME things seem to be working better. I was now able to download the AVG update and to update Spybot and add the DSO Exploit patch. Ran Spybot and found 39 problems that it didn't find this morning.. Sheesh, are those new or did the fix just allow me to find more of them?

BIG QUESTION: SHOULD I RUN ALL THE SCANS AGAIN THAT WOULDN'T WORK RIGHT BEFORE?

Other problems remaining:

Still getting a message on start up: "Error Loading c\programfiles\wildtangent\apps\CDA\cdaengine0400.dll. Specified module could not be found."

There are still some operations that won't load, such as the games online that I play--which is probably what's giving me all this adware, so maybe it's fate. That site is: http://gamerival.gra...iliate=madblast. Sigh. But I just want my pool game.

And btw, I can't seem to use the codes and emoticons on this site! Got to play around a bit and see what's working better, and what is not changed.

Don't know how you people can stand dealing with people like me!! Kudos!!

Relax, you're doing great! If you're now able, please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cvyhckzo] c:\windows\system32\cvyhckzo.exe

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\Program Files\WildTangent <- this folder
c:\windows\system32\cvyhckzo.exe

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Okay, done. Log below.

First thing I noticed on reboot is that on the AOL logon screen, it is FINALLY showing that my firewall (SP2) is detected. Last night I couldn't figure out why it was not detected, even though it was turned on.

AVG detected a lot more viruses last night and this morning before fix. Last night I also downloaded the TDS-3 program that this forum recommends--it detected about another 8 trojans--I deleted the positive identification ones and left the two "suspicious" ones.

Another thing I noticed yesterday is that I can't print from this forum (I have to copy your instructions to Word, and print it from there), and it SEEMS that I can't print from the internet--but I'll have to check into that more.

An odd icon has appeared on my desktop...it looks like a notepad with the Adaware gear on it, and it's called "desktop".

I think PTRUN32 are files from a program I uninstalled (it was a program for AIM controls--such as timers--called Parent Tools for AIM).

Should I keep running all the suggested scans everyday until we finish working on this?

Here's the log:

Great work! I think we've got it. Your log is free of malware. :tazz:

When trying to print from this site are your using the AOL browser or Internet Explorer?

Ha! You think I know? I read the forum IN AOL, so I guess it's the aol browser, but this inability to print from forums and from the internet is a new development.

I'm on a different computer right now (and at work you'll note that smilies and codes work fine, as does printing, even though I am in AOL), but I think I found something significant after I sent the new log this morning from home.

I did all the scans again, and while there was far less stuff (4 in Adaware, 0 in Spybot); AVG keeps finding viruses (11) on the scan, and keeps popping up with viruses--mostly this Stubby.C thing--when I click on any of the options it says it can't heal, delete, or send them to the vault.

Anyway, they are mostly in one file location. This is a folder I made when I first got the computer under C:/Documents and Settings--I wanted all the family's files to default there rather than "My Documents"--the whole Dell "user" thing really confused me at first (and still does), and I just wanted to make one user. But it seems to be just a backup of everything, and long ago I gave it up and just made separate directories under My Documents cause that's where everything was going anyway.

Anyway, there are a TON of temporary files there--both temp and internet temp--that don't seem to be getting purged by Disk Cleanup. Is that possible?? That's where all these viruses were too--right after I did another Disk Cleanup (without reboot). Ya think I can just delete that folder??

Does this make any sense to you? I barely understand what I'm trying to say myself! I do see progress here, but once all the malware is under control then I've got to figure out which functions are still not working properly and if they were damaged by viruses or something.

I sure appreciate the help; and please don't jump off a bridge after dealing with me. :tazz:

Reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. (You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.)

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Let us know if that helps! :tazz:

Okay, Morning Update:

Every time AVG runs, it finds several instances of this Stubby.C virus that it can't fix, delete, or quarantine. This virus always shows up in a file ending "farmext.exe". This morning 6 instances showed up in the following directory:

C:\RECYCLER\s-1-5-21-162098842-2938373298-1382395688-1007\dc20tmp\farmext.cab\farmext.exe

What IS this directory?? I don't remember seeing it before. I don't think this is my recycle bin, because I emptied the recycle bin and the files remain.

CAN I DELETE THIS DIRECTORY?

The other location of these files is always in one of the subfolders of: C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp. There are about 30 subfolders FULL of files, including a lot of garbage files AND a folder of temporary internet files (the contents of which I manually deleted when the disk cleanup function did not). I have always set my schedule to delete both on and offline temporary files every day--and I have followed your instructions to delete temp files in safe mode two times. These files remain and are NOT deleted by that option.

CAN I DELETE THE CONTENTS OF THE TEMP FOLDER?

I still cannot print from the internet or from this forum, or use any of the codes or smilies from this forum.

PLEEEEEEEEEEEZE HELP! (I wanted to use the help smiley, but I can't.)

Thanks so much.

Two more things:

I am now on my other computer at home. I can't access my checking account from the computer we are working on. (And this one is in even worse shape--but we'll deal with the other one first.)

I had a revelation. I recently upgraded AOL to the Security edition (last week), and really, that's when the browser problems began--before that, it was just my hijacked Norton. Doesn't AOL reinstall and upgrade Internet Explorer? I updated by download, not CD. Maybe I need to uninstall and reinstall AOL from disk?

Checking to see if codes work from this computer. Yup.
