please help I'm going mad. Our PC is running like a mad thing. We keep getting various blue screen errors in XP and the PC shuts down. One example is

stop :ox0000000A (OxOA080008,OxO00000002,OxO00000001,OxO804DC11D) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL

not sure if this is all connected but we also keep getting a bubble pop up with local connection 3 a network cable is unplugged
sometimes get the same msg but with local connection 4 when this happens the green modem arrows change clour and the connection drops, then sometiemes it picks up agian other times it boots us off.

I have looked through some postings and have to admit I'm baffled- assume no technical knowledge if you think you can help me.

We have broadband and use a BT voyager 100 USB ADSL modem. Just one rather crap pc no wireless. Would welcome any suggestions thanks :tazz:

Hello izemjoe...Welcome to G2G!

Sounds like your modem driver might be the issue. Let's uninstall the modem from Device manager and let XP reinstall it for you.

Right click My Computer and choose Properties. Under the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. In the resulting list, scroll down to Modems and click the + to expand the catagory. Right click on your modem and choose "Uninstall"..."Apply" the change and click "Ok".

Restart your computer and let Windows detect and install the modem. If the problem persists, you may need to update the drivers...they can be found HERE.

Let me know if this helps...

izemjoe...

Go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and see if Virtual CD is listed there. If it is listed, see if it gives a version number for the application.

Download HiJackThis, install it, run it, and attach a log to your next post for me.

Hello izemjoe...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you...for some strange reason the e-mail notification didn't notify me that you had posted on the 16th...I'll check into why that happened.

The virtual cd is in the HJT log (next to last line) and is located in the Program Files folder...I'll have to research that a little before we remove it. There are a few other "suspect" entries in the log, as well. I'd like for you to go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the Start Here.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself... at the end of that process, post a hijackthis log in THAT forum (start a topic there) for the experts to look at...they are busy in there, it will be a couple of days before you hear back from them.

The errors you are getting are ususally related to failing hardware or hardware drivers. Which ones, I'm not sure yet. Is your machine fairly old? It's possible we could be looking at a HDD starting to head south.

Double-click My Computer, and then select your hard drive to check. On the File menu, click "Properties".
Click the "Tools" tab. In the "Error-checking" box, click "Check Now". In "Check disk" options, select the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" check box and the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box.

If the volume you are checking is in use, which it will be, a message asks whether you want to delay disk error checking until the next time you restart your computer. Select "Yes" and restart...disk error checking runs and the volume chosen is not available to run other tasks during this process.

Let me know if this improves things...I'll look into the driver issues.

hello

I have worked my way throught the list. I have also posted my most recent log in the hijack this forum things are much the same I think, it keeps crashing. Its not very old (three years) but perhaps thats ancient?

The only one I didn't do is the cleanup one at the beginning as I wasn't sure how to back up all the files?

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi izemjoe...

I peeked at the log you posted in the Malware Forum and there are still a few things in there that we'll let the experts there help you with.

Let's see if we can stop the Virtual cd from running. Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Manage". In the left pane, expand (click the +) "Services and Applications" and then click on "Services". In the right pane, look in the list for anything to do with virtual cd including an entry like "vcssecs". If you find a listing for this, right click on it and choose "Properties".

In the resulting window, in the "Startup Type" dropdown menu, select "Manual". Then click on the "Stop" button. Click "Apply" then "Ok".

Reboot and let me know if this stabalizes the machine.
