Hey, GTG.

Usually I'm posting for advice in fixing other people's computers. Unfortunately for me, now I'm the victim. My computer got attacked today with some sort of spyware. I ran AdAware Personal SE (defs. all updated and everything) last night and removed all found objects, and then today, WHAM! I got nailed by something crazy. Whatever it was, it installed MySearch toolbar onto IE, and a couple other programs also, I think. So I ran AdAware again and it found about 400 things in one sweep. But it was unable to remove some things, listed below:

C:\Progra~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\TBPS.ini
C:\Program Files\toolbar\common.dll
C:\Program Files\toolbar\nzqlihv.wzg
C:\Program Files\toolbar\PIB.exe
C:\Program Files\toolbar\TBPS.exe
C:\Program Files\toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe
C:\Program Files\toolbar\toolbar.dll

It suggested I close all explorer windows and try again and also run once more after reboot. I did all these things, but it was still unable to remove them. At some point, my computer froze, so I had to hard boot, but as Windows XP began to load, the computer rebooted itself. Now, it won't boot up into Windows XP in normal mode, nor will it boot in Last Known Good Configuration. The only way I can get it to boot is Safe Mode (or Safe Mode w/Networking, what I am booted up in now). Unfortunately, I was unable to run HJT while my computer was working in normal mode, so I had to run it while in safe mode. I don't know if it makes a difference, but if you can think of a way to get me back in to normal mode, I'll be happy to try and run it there! :tazz: Fortunately, while in safe mode, I was able to back up my files... if reloading the OS is what it comes to, I think I can deal with that, but I would prefer that to be a last resort.

Many thanks to all helpers out there. ;)

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.
Check all instances of aklsp.dll (and nothing else), and move them to the "Remove" pane.
Then click Finish.

The presence of that file could mean you have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Pieter

Hi, Pieter,

Thank you for your help. I have done what you've asked and removed aklsp.dll, but I ran into a snag with l2mfix. When trying to run l2mfix.bat, the command screen pops up for a half a second, then disappears. I never get prompted to enter 1 or 2 because the program kills itself. I tried rebooting (btw, it still won't boot normally... I'm in safe mode). Are there some settings I need to change to get l2mfix to work on my computer?

Thanks!

Then we'll use the "old" method.
  • Download finditnt2000xp.zip.
  • Unzip the contents of finditnt2000xp.zip to a convenient location.
  • Navigate to the Find It NT-2K-XP folder and double-click on find.bat.
  • A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.
  • Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
  • Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post.
Regards,

Pieter

I downloaded this program, and at least this time the command screen didn't die on me. The program ran, but no output.txt ever showed up. I'm not sure what that means - if the program didn't finish scanning and got killed, or if there's no output to give or what...

Any ideas?

Thanks :tazz:

Can you check in the FindIt folder.

Output.txt is composed of several other text files.
See if you can find any of these:
system.txt + hidden.txt + guard.txt + temp.txt + useragent.txt + notify.txt + gibberish.txt + locate.txt

Post their content if you do.

Pieter

Nope, the only things in the FindIt folder are find.bat, locate.com, and strings.exe. Hidden files and folders are currently shown under my folder options.

Maybe my computer is more messed up than I thought. :tazz:

Thanks for the quick response ;)

Are you comfortable working in the registry?

You said you normally help people, so you might be.

What I suspect to be the culprit is a registrykey under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

These are the normal ones:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\crypt32chain
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\cryptnet
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\cscdll
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ScCertProp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Schedule
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\sclgntfy
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\termsrv
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\wlballoon

If you see any others (pointing to a randomly named dll in the system32 folder) export them and post them)

Regards,

Pieter

Maybe a correct hunch, Pieter! My registry shows all the keys you mentioned as well as one more:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\DateTime

Within DateTime is a key pointed at C:\WINDOWS\System32\IFROF32.dll

I exported the key, but the forum won't allow me to upload a file with a .reg extension. Do you want me to try something else, or do you have all the information you need right now?

Thanks, :tazz:

On second thought, maybe this is what you were looking for :tazz:
Here is what is in the DateTime folder. ;)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\DateTime]
"Asynchronous"=dword:00000000
"DllName"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\IFROF32.DLL"
"Impersonate"=dword:00000000
"Logon"="WinLogon"
"Logoff"="WinLogoff"
"Shutdown"="WinShutdown"

Excellent. :tazz:

That gives us something to go on.

Download and unzip:
http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip
Run killbox and paste each of these lines into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X button, when it says reboot now, say no and continue to paste the lines into the box in turn and follow the above procedure every time, after the last line has been pasted let it reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\IFROF32.DLL <= save till last

After the reboot copy and paste the text in bold below into a text editor such as Notepad.
Save this text as FixVX2.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on FixVX2.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\DateTime]

Then download VX2.Finder from http://www.downloads...g/VX2Finder.exe
Run it and use the User Agent$ and Restore Policy button and reboot when prompted.

Copy & paste the text in bold below into notepad and save it as recyclerem.bat
(Set filetype to "All Files")

attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\Recycler
del %systemdrive%\Recycler
attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\Recycled
del %systemdrive%\Recycled
shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Close all programs and doubleclick recyclerem.bat

Then try if you can boot normally again.
Keeping them crossed,

Pieter

Another snag... I downloaded and ran killbox, pasting the two lines in, but after selecting to reboot now, I got an error message:

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!

And the computer never rebooted. :tazz:

Do I need to try to replace this registry data?

Try it like this.

First do the registryfix.
Then reboot and check to see if that Winlogon key was not replaced by a new one.

Then delete the files with Killbox.

Reboot, use VX2.Finder and clean out the Recycle Bin with the .bat file.

Ok, I think the registry entry is fixed. The DateTime folder has been removed. KillBox is still giving me the same error, though. Should I move on to using VX2.Finder?

Yes. Try that. Getting back control through the Restore Policy might just dio the trick, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

PS You only need to remove guard.tmp since the key pointing to the .dll was sucessfully removed (Maybe that helps too)

Pieter
