Okay, this is my first time to be here, and I need some help. My XP computer has the trojan.vundo (identified by Norton's), and using Symantec's instructions, it will not remove it. Ad-aware cannot find it, nor will SpyBot Search and Destroy.

It seems that the winfix is somehow tied to the vundo because of the way the computer acts when going to IE.

I would appreciate any kind of help anyone can give me with this problem.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

• Run HijackThis
  
• Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  
• POST the ENTIRE log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste'). Your last post lacked most of the HijackThis report

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Thanks for getting in touch with me. I worked on the computer today with the infection and tried to get to a point on the forun to post. Everytime I tried to open the topic, it told me that an error had been encountered and that I was denied access to the post.

I will try to get back to the computer tomorrow morning and follow your schedule. The winfix problem keeps on trying to dial when I boot the computer which causes considerable problems with trying to get things done. Of course, the very first thing is Norton;s notice of the Vundo problem.

Hopefully, my morning will be free enough to spend some time at the computer with the problem. Losing two in-laws in one year has a trying effect on a family.

Again, thanks for your interest and support. The computer is desperately needed. I thought that perhaps the posting had been closed since I could not find it even with a search. I'm new to the forum, so please be patient with me.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat

2. Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

3. Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

4. Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Here are the three results from the scans and reports from ActiveScan, HiJackThis log and vundofix.txt file. I hope that this is what you wanted. We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

• Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc then click OK
  
• Click the Extended tab.
  
• Scroll down until you find the service.
  ===>hpdj
  
• Click once on the service to highlight it.
  
• Click Stop
  
• Right-Click on the service.
  
• Click on 'Properties'
  
• Select the 'General' tab
  
• Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  
• From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  
• Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.


B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste hpdj in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdj.exe

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I posted a response to your last post, but it apparently did not take.

I followed part A to the nth degree; however, when I got to part B, I could not find HJT. The vundo has not reappeared when booting the computer. Am I rid of it or is it just hiding?
