Hello, Thank you so much for any help you can give me. I have followed all the instructions and run all the programs. I have Trojan.Vundo and Newdotnet, whatever that is, and probably more. My computer sounds like it's croaking! Here's my HiJackThis Log. Thanks!

Hi MsHelpless and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

First, Download LSPFix.exe to a convenient location. Do NOT run this program. This is only to be used if you lose Internet Access after removing NewDotNet.

To Get rid of NewDotNet, go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

New.Net Applications or New.Net Domains (anything that says New.Net)

If it is not there,Please run the following tool, NewDotNet Removal tool.

(ONLY if you can't find the New.Net in Add/Remove programs).

In the event that you lose Internet access after removing New.Net, please double-click LSPFix.exe that you downloaded earlier. You will see 2 panels. If there is any file listed in the "Remove" panel on the right-side, leave it as is and just click "Finish>>" then reboot your computer and you should now have access to the Internet.. If nothing is listed under the "Remove Panel", do NOT do anything - just close the program. You will need to use another computer to come back here for further instructions on what to do.

Please post back a fresh HiJackthis log.

Thank you so much for your help and quick reply! I'm sorry my response is not as quick. I am recovering from major surgery and have to rest a lot!

I was able to remove Newdotnet from add/remove programs and a reboot. I hope it's gone!

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi Excal,

Well, this is not going well. I am booting up in Safe Mode, and am then taken to my Welcome screen where I click my screen name. Then the screen goes completely black except for Safe Mode typed in tiny print in each corner, and Windows XP at the top. The rest of the screen is pitch black and nothing else ever happens.

I have System Restore turned off, is that correct, or could that be causing the problem?

Hi Excal,
Well, I went through all the steps, but I still have Vundo. The Norton Vundo window pops up as usual. Also, every time I boot up, a window comes up that says Newdotnet can not open because it's missing a file. I guess that means there is still a part of it on the computer. Vundo still existing may be my fault though. I didn't disable Spybot, didn't even think about it. Well, here are my logs and scans:

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. When in safe mode, disable spysweeper and Spybot.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

NewDotNet

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\QuickSearch

10. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\gendel32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\GatorPdpLoudInstaller.log
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_90.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts.bho

11. Run the program CleanUp!

12. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hi Excal,

I went through The Fix instructions twice, but I still have Vundo on my machine. I cannot find any traces of Newdotnet, so I believe that is gone.

I do not have an ActiveScan log, because it found nothing malicious on my computer, and therefore didn't generate a log.

Hi Excal,
Well, my machine seems okay, I think. There's nothing really wrong that I notice, and I think it's running faster. I don't notice it sounding like it's wheezing like it was before!
But, yeah, The Norton window still comes up when I reboot my computer, and never goes away. It currently says that Trojan.Vundo is at C:\WINDOWS\.dll

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Hello,

Thanks so much for your help! I'm thrilled that my log is finally clean. But, I still can't get rid of the Norton Virus Alert window for Trojan.Vundo. My Norton Virus Threat log says it is constantly trying to attack my computer and that repair is failing. It shows the date and time, and Source:

C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\hardnet.dll
Description: The file C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\hardnet.dll is infected with the Trojan.Vundo virus.

Also,
