What I suggest you do is a REPAIR INSTALLATION of windows, using the link in my signature as a guide. Don't worry, after doing this all your programs will still work and you won't lose any files or settings. All this does is replace your operating system files (C:\WINDOWS). You will need to redo all windows updates after doing this.
Please note that not all OEM Windows XP cd's support this repair option. Please post back if you are unable to do the repair and we will pursue other options.

by doing start > run > chckdsk /f
also you may want to check your ram using this tool
and i agree with fenor....doing a repair install couldn't hurt (hopefully)

if your drive is failing or corrupted...it will fail to put information in the right places on the drive..causing fragmentation
if your ram is going out then it will cause the information stored within it to unload at inoportune times...also causing fragmentation.

cleanup basically does what the xp disk cleanup does...deletes all the temp files and cookies and doodads like that....get's rid of useless or broken things i think.....don't think it does anything with ram..

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.
If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
