Running the usual antivirus/adware/trojan scans return no problems, but it still seems like I'm seeing remnants of Look2Me adware. hijackthis logfile:

Hello dhendrix11 and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a CWS variant attack; I don’t see Look2me in there. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:
CCleaner
Hoster
CWShredder
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh [b]HijackThis log

Hello again

It's looking a lot better, with just some tidying-up to do. Hopefully peace and serenity have returned to your PC. The scan did not reveal any VX2 (L2Me) infection, but those 021 entries look like the remnants of SpySheriff or or something similar, if they remain on your next log, I think we must run a fix for them, even though they appear benign.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O21 - SSODL: SysTray.Exys - {7368D5FC-6F5C-4f5b-B964-E67214F67852} - (no file)
O21 - SSODL: SysTray.Excn2 - {1722ECFF-4356-4f5b-B534-E67294FE75E9} - (no file)
O21 - SSODL: A0FDDEBD - {07BE4762-7ACA-3CC8-089B-3C6E34FC416D} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look.

Again, much thanks for your help. After running all of your suggested fixes last night, my computer appeared to be running much better. However, upon going to my computer this afternoon, it had shut itself off and now will not boot into windows. So, unless something changes when I try again this evening, I will be reinstalling windows.

Hello again

Just to be sure boot into the Recovery Console by following these steps:
  • Insert the Windows CD and restart your computer. Follow your computer's prompts to boot from the CD. (You might need to adjust settings in the computer's BIOS to enable the option to boot from a CD.)
  • Follow the setup prompts to load the basic Windows startup files. At the Welcome To Setup screen press R to start the Recovery Console.
  • Enter the number of the Windows installation you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, type the Administrator password. If you're using the Recovery Console on a system running Windows XP Home Edition, this password is blank by default, so just press Enter.
Now that you have access to Windows, let's just reverse the last fix.

Open HJT and select View The List of Backups. The bottom one in the list should be the last fix. Place a tick or checkmark in the box beside it and select RESTORE then click YES

You have now reversed the last fix.

May I see a HJT log please?

It seems as though, during the middle of all this, the RAM in my computer may have gone bad. Anyhow, here is the latest HJT log:

Unfortunately, in the 3 minutes that I have had my computer up and running, I am still getting IE popups when no programs are running.

Again, thank you for your help.

Hello again

What you describe is normally the behaviour of a registry protecting programme, preventing you from making changes. Looking at your HJT log, I see Ad-Aware Ad-Watch running. That would do it. Please disable it for the duration of the fix.

Are you still getting pop-ups?

Hello,

I made sure to close all running programs before running HJT and fixing the selected items. However, all of those items return if I restart my computer. This is the procedure I followed:

1. Close all open programs
2. Run HJT
3. Select items you suggested, and fix checked items.
4. Restart computer
5. Run HJT and post log

All of this is done from normal mode. Should any of these steps be done in safe mode?
I did see a few popups last night after restarting my computer, but I let it run overnight and did not see anymore when I came back to it this afternoon.

It is still running. It has to be disabled.

Please run the last fix again, but disable Ad-watch off first.

I have discovered that starting adwatch is actually the item that causes those entries to reappear in my HJT log. Could there be a problem with my Ad-Aware installation? Even after disabling ad-watch and fixing the items through HJT, I am still getting popups.

Hello again

I don't know too much about Ad-Watch since I have never used it; I'll find out.

In the meantime, leave it disabled. Let's look deeper and see if we have a rootkit infection.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:AproposFix
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Download:
RKFiles.zip

Create a new folder called C:\Antispyware\RKFiles

Extract the contents of RKFiles.zip into this new RKFiles folder.

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Open the C:\Antispyware\RKFiles folder * Locate and double-click the RKFILES.BAT to run this tool.
* Sit back and wait until it has finished.
* When it is finally finished a text file will open.
* Save the contents of that text file.

N.B.: It should save by default to C:\Log.txt

Reboot back to Normal Mode.

Hello again

I had a chat with an ex-Lavasoft expert about AdWatch and whilst he advises that the auto selection is a good setting to use, sometimes it will cause a problem to return.

To disable AdWatch:

Open Ad-Aware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options.

Has peace and tranquility returned to your PC?

You had a rootkit infection courtesy of Apropos, which normally comes with SurfAccuracy. They are very difficult to spot since they have no real outward signs. I usually try to fix everything I can see and if malware appears to be present still, then I scan for it. The other RK scanner was negative.

How is it running now?
