Winfixer virus plus Java Bytever.b

Have been struggling with Winfixer virus for several weeks. Decided to add Panda TruProtect to the Norton Internet Security that was already on the machine. But that has not helped. The only thing it has done is cause a long delay between log-on and the time I can actually launch Internet Explorer.

Have used CleanUp, as well as CWShredder (nothing found in scan). Used Trend Housecall for an online scan which came up with the fact that I also have a Java_ByTever.B virus. Trend Housecall said it was unable to clean or delete because the file was in use. More information about this particular virus can be found here:

Further to my post below, my Norton AntiVirus now informs that I also have the Trojan.Vundo virus and that Norton is "Unable to repair this file" because "Access to the file was denied". I have run HJT again, and my file is shown below. Norton identifies the offending file as: c:\windows\system32\ssttt.dll

Welcome to the GTG Forums, I will be reviewing your HJT log.
Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

You will need to print out these instructions for a reference or you can
save them by copying and pasting them into notepad and saving the text file to the desktop.

This process will take a few steps, please take your time and follow the directions in the order posted.
If you don't understand something please ask before performing any task..

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

Press enter to continue....
At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
- C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttt.dll
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
staff then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\tttss.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Excellent! It seems that we have 2 of the 3 problems solved as ActiveScan killed the Java ByteverB and the VundoFix killed the Trojan.Vundo virus. Winfixer has been quiet today, but I assume that it is still lying in wait somewhere, especially since a Norton pop-up comes up pretty often saying that “rules automatically created for the proper Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services”.

ActiveScan found 1 virus which it disinfected. The Activescan text file is as follows:

The name of the above file matches what Trend Housecall identified as a virus.

With regards to VundoFix, I made the error of reversing the file paths but I assume this makes no difference given the results (I typed in the tttss.* path first and then I typed in the ssttt.dll when asked for the second path)

PS My wife is very worried about identity theft and is worried that the viruses have allowed people to potentially have access to our on-line brokerage and banking accounts. I told her that the viruses we have mainly place adware on the computer and do not constitute a huge risk. Are her fears misplaced or should I be contacting my bank and broker to be changing passwords, etc. and perhaps switch back to dial-up to avoid getting future viruses?

Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

The Vundo infection that you had displays advertisments and doesn't steal information. It is however good practice to change your passwords once and awhile...

Now lets get that pesky Java ByteverB...

1. Go to Start > Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Java icon (coffee cup) in the control panel. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon - please find the update button or tab in that Java control panel. Update your Java, and reboot.

After reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java icon.

3. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.

There are three options on this window to clear the cache - leave ALL 3 checked:

1. Downloaded Applets
2. Downloaded Applications
3. Other Files

4. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

5. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Now post a new HJT log by using Add Reply and we will take a look.

This is weird. I don't have an "Update" tab in the Java control panel. The tabs that I do have are as follows: Basic, Advanced, Browser, Proxies, Cache, Certificates, About . When I look at the Help button (which is availabe in each tab section), it tells me that I should have this tab. But I don't have the tab, so I can't update Java.

The About tab tells me that the Java that I am running is as follows:

Java ™ Plug-in Control Panel
Java ™ Runtime Environment, Standard Edition, 1.4.2
Default Virtual Machine Version 1.4.2-b28
Java ™ Plug-in 1.4.2

Appreciate if you could advise an alternate way to update Java

That is strange you don't have an update button??? So we can do this manually.

Once you have gone to that page look for this on the page:

Windows Users: To see if your browser supports automatic installation, please click here.

That will take you to a page to update your Java... Make sure to follow the directions on that page, you will also need to verify that it was installed.

Once you have completed that post back a new HJT log by using Add Reply

My apologies, but I was having a very difficult time getting Java updated. Updating the Windows Installer and then downloading Java seemed to do the trick. Time has also been short this past week as I just started a new job.

Hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving, and one of the many things I am thankful for is the wilingness of people like yourself to help techno-incompetents like me.

I have deleted the Java temp files as advised and following is a new HJT file.

OK, your HijackThis log is looking better, we still need to to a few things to make sure.

Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

You will need to print out these instructions for a reference or you can
save them by copying and pasting them into notepad and saving the text file to the desktop.

This process will take a few steps, please take your time and follow the directions in the order posted.
If you don't understand something please ask before performing any task..

Download CleanUp
Install the program, don't run it yet, we will later.

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.

Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
- Install background guard
- Install scan via context menu
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
- Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Now open HJT and perform a scan, place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Now close all browsers and open windows except for HijackThis, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HijackThis.

Now go to Start | Control Panel | Add-Remove Programs:
Remove the following:

ViewPoint - or any variation of it.

Once that is completed, using Windows Explorer find and remove the following folders/files if present:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <-- Folder

Now lets run the CleanUp program.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Once in SafeMode run the ewido security suite. DO NOT open any other windows while the program is running, it will interfere with the scan.

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot your system back into Normal Mode, once you have done that post the results from the ewido scan and a new HijackThis Log by using Add Reply.

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you don't currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:

[/list]I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:

SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other Necessary Programs:

A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox

Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
