Hello Marissa and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Spyware Doctor from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\klkkj.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {CE70731D-F28D-4D81-9D61-C8EE60378401} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll
    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkklk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log from normal mode and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Firstly, although I am normally the only user of this computer, I do have a guest setting that other members of the family occasionally use.

I followed your instructions the best I could. However, everytime I run VundoFix from Safe Mode, HijackThis never opens. Instead of HijackThis opening, the entire screen turns black (except for the words safe mode in each corner of the screen), and the computer becomes non responsive, and I have to manually reboot. Besides that, below are the results:

Hello again

The vundofix also works in normal mode, but safer mode is always preferred since fewer drivers and applications load.

I will need to see a HJT log from the guest account profile when this one is clean.

The Vundofix log is incomplete so I can't see what happened and the HJT log shows Vundo alive and well, I can only assume that the fix was not completed. Please run the fix again in normal mode and post the complete Vundofix log and a fresh HJT log following a reboot.

Don't bother doing the ActiveScan or the Clean-Up. Please discard the vundofix you have previously downloaded and get a fresh one.

Thanks.

I am unable to run VundoFix completely. Even in normal startup mode, HijackThis doesn't start up, but all of my processes terminate instead, and I have to manually reboot! :tazz:

Hello again

OK, start HJT manually when required to do so. Please post logs so I can see what is happening rather than guessing.

Thanks

I cannot run HJT when required, because VundoFix makes my computer non-responsive. It will not run. Is there another program or fixer I could try? I can run HJT right now, which I will and include that log in this post. The virus is alive and well, as I am still getting these wretched pop-ups. Thanks for your help, and your patience.

Hello again

Nothing has changed and it is fairly obvious that you are having problems.

I think there are 2 things we can try now. First lets try to repair you:

I think that now is a good time to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
The other way is:

Download the Trial Version Spy Sweeper it is a 14-day trial.
  • Install it.
  • Once the programme is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, reboot into Safe Mode. Re-open Spysweeper, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
And a fresh HJT log please.

I THINK IT WORKED! Thank you soooo much.

I first ran the System File Checker like you said, and then ran Spy Sweeper. The first time I ran SS it found a number of cookies/viruses/adware, including Virtumonde and CoolWebSearch! Ack! Anyway, it removed about four of the about 25 it found the first time around, before the computer crashed. I then manually rebooted and ran the scan again, and all four of those were not found again, so I'm assuming even though the computer crashed, the programs/viruses were removed. I then proceeeded to run the program again to get rid of the remaining issues. Luckily this time around it wiped out all of the other issues without a problem. However, because it crashed the first time around, a few of the things it found, including Virtumonde, will not appear on the Spy Sweeper log. Below are my Spy Sweeper and current HJT logs.

Thanks again!

Hello again

Now I am trying to work out what is causing your PC's strange behaviour. The HJT log has cleaned up well with just an adjustment to make. Have the Pop-ups now stopped, and peace and serenity returned to your PC?

The answer will tell me more than log gazing I think.

These are the two options for safe mode: During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Safe mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and check SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

If you boot to safe mode and a black screen, press ctrl, alt and delete at the same time. Click on file then new task(run...) In the Open box type msconfig and press enter. If msconfig opens click the boot.ini tab at the top then uncheck /SAFEBOOT Then click on the general tab at the top and make sure Normal startup is checked. Click Apply then OK. The computer should now prompt you to reboot. Hopefully you will be able to get into normal windows now.

Here's the fix:

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look.
