Cannot connect to certain sites

I've run into a problem with my browers. I can get to most sites just fine, but there are a few that I cannot reach. For instance. I cannot reach Amazon.com, Ebay.com, or Paypal.com. I can get to buy.ebay.com, but not to www.ebay.com. I thought that it may have been a problem connecting with secure sites, but I can still get to my bank account online.

If I run tracert on www.amazon.com, the packet makes one jump to localhost [127.0.0.1]. I can run a tracert on amazon.com and it will make 13 jumps before timing out at:
sl-st20-ash-12-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.19.240]

Tracert on ebay.com, www.ebay.com, paypal.com, and www.paypal.com all result in a one jump return to 127.0.0.1.

So I'm not sure if I've been infected with something, or what. Any ideas?

This problem persists across IE and Firefox, both fully updated.

Hi Metus,

You are running Hijackthis from a temporary file,but Hijackthis should be in a permanent folder to save its backups in case we need to undo any changes. Please delete the one you currently have.
  • Download HijackThis again by clicking here,but don’t hit “Open”, but “Save as”. Then navigate to your desktop, and hit “Save”. After downloading, minimize all windows until you’re on your desktop.
  • Now double-click on the zip file containing the HijackThis.exe file. Select the HijackThis.exe, and hit the combination “Ctrl + C”.
  • Minimize the zipfolder, and go to My Computer. Double-click on C:/.
  • In the menu bar you’ll find “File”. Click it, then choose “New”, and then “Folder”.
  • Call this folder HijackThis. Double-click to open this - new - folder.
  • Now use the combination “Ctrl + V” to paste the HijackThis.exe into this folder. Now double-click on the HijackThis.exe in the folder you’ve just created and please post a new log.

You got a bad trojan..the file may be gone, we will check, but we should straighten what it modified..

Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch
O23 - Service: MSSQL (MSSQL2K6) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sqlsrv.exe (file missing)

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Go to Start>Run and type: cmd

In the command window that opens type this:

sc delete MSSQL2K6

Hit the Enter key and then type: exit to exit the window.

Now please copy the following text in the code box to Notepad. Make sure there is no empty line above REGEDIT4. In Notepad go to File > Save As. Name it Fixit.reg, in the drop down box at the bottom choose "All Files", and save it on your desktop. Then double click on Fixit.reg and let it merge with the registry

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Now delete these files if found:

C:\WINDOWS\sqlsrv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rofl.sys

Download the Hoster Here

Unzip Hoster to your desktop

Open up the Hoster program.
  • Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click back up Host files
  • then click Restore orginal host files
  • close program
Go here to make an online scan:

http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Then please post a new HijackThis log along with Panda results.

I did what you said, but the "sc delete MSSQL2K6" didn't work and gave me this error:

[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Please delete this file:

C:\installer.exe

Let's empty your java cache:

1. Click Start > Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Java icon (coffee cup) in the control panel. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon -

3. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.

There are three options on this window to clear the cache - leave ALL 3 checked.
1. Downloaded Applets
2. Downloaded Applications
3. Other Files

4. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

5. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Everything else looks good, are you having any more problems?
