Hi, ...i have msn 7.5 but it doesn't work, when i click on "sign in" nothing happens. My old msn (very old version) does work however it sometimes just signs me out for no reason. I used to have zonelabs firewall installed, but i uninstalled that but it still deosn't work... so im not sure what the problem is... I've looked around trying differnet things but nothing seems to be working for me...On MSN Messenger, when I got to the Tools menu, click on options, then click on connections it tells me that i am not connected to the .NET messenger service...ive tried the troubleshooter, and gone to msn help...still nothing

Thanks in advance

I recently upgraded to 7.5 also and had similar problems. I have ZoneAlarm Secruity Suite also. I fixed my problem by uninstalling anything that deals with MSN Messanger and then downloaded the new version again. It fixed my problem and haven't had a problem since.

Well, to begin with, anytime you have multiple virus protector or firewalls on your computers, it's going to affect your performance. If it were me, I wouldn't use Nortan and Mcafee on the same computer, that's just asking for problems. If you still have the same problem connecting even after uninstalling and reinstalling version 7.5, try tweaking the settings a bit or even check on the MSN messanger FAQ's. I have a feeling if it's not the installation itself, then it's probably just a simple setting that needs to be changed. That is, of course, unless your firewall is blocking connection to it. Which, if you still have your firewall intact, just close it and try to use the Messanger program.

No, I got rid of the firewall and haven't installed it since, and I dont have Mcafee, just norton which is old anyways...the only thing that the msn messengeer truobleshooter is saying is that there is a problem with my "hosts file" (have no clue what that even is) it says that my hosts file conatins msn related entries which may interfere with name resolution, but it tries to fix it but never actually does. there could also be something wrong with my "key ports" and or proxy or firewall settings. but i uninstaled zonelabs firewall so it should be that. i even disabled the norton autoprotect and microsft antispyware realtime proection..still nothing (even though they have never been a problem before)...

Well, lets try checking the settings within MSN messenger itself since you've already ruled out any firewalls or antivirus programs. Open up the messenger program and go to Tools>Options>Connection. Try to use the connection troubleshooter. Also, if that doesn't work, click on advanced settings and reply with what is in your advanced settings.

Just out of curiousity, are you sure you have the password correct? Might be something as simple as that. Not sure. Just an idea.

yah..my password and everything is correct...i can use web messenger, i can even use my old version of msn messenger, just not the new 7.5 version...the problem is something to do with the connection...i have mozilla but i dont think it would be that...

when i go to the connection troubleshooter it notices two problems, one with the "hosts file" and another with the "key ports" unfotunatley it tries to fix them but can't.

when i got the the advanced settings, the TCP is fine when i check it, however the SOCKS, when i try to check it it says "you must specify a proxy server name"...and HTTP is blank, when u click test nothing happens

so there is sumthing wrong with the http/socks/proxy/hosts file/key ports im just not sure what since i hav no clue what they mean/are

In my advanced settings, everything is blank except for the second box in the socks section. Mine is set at 1080 and everything else is blank.

Here's another thing to try and figure out what's happening. At the bottom of the advanced settings is a box that says "Connection Logging". Check that box and try to connect. If it fails, find the log in the file it says it saves it at (My Documents\My Received Files) and post the log for us.

It may contain some information about your username and password so make sure you blank out any personal information or passwords.

Hey,

Sorry for delay in reply.

I see in the log quite a few failed pings and failed attempts to connect. If you click the link at the top of your log file, it directs you to a form you fill out that gets sent directly to Microsoft. I honestly have no idea why your messenger isn't connecting. Best thing I can tell you is to fill that out and let us know what they say. Your settings seem right and everything so if it's not the installation program, the settings, or your connection to the internet, im not really sure. But, as I said, best bet..fill out the form and let us know what Microsoft has to say about your problem.

:tazz: I do not think you are supposed to have 2 different MSN Messengers on the
same computer !? I would assume they would "conflict" with one another !?
Perhaps it would be best if you just uninstalled BOTH MSN Messengers and
installed the more reliable and less troublesome Yahoo IM !?
And if you wanted to see what is in your "Hosts File" ( most people have
only 1 entry and because your Error Message mentioned at least 2 entries
perhaps there is spyware in there ), I recommend you download "Host File
Viewer" available at http://members.acces...sFileReader.zip .
However, this comes in a "zip" format and would require you to "unzip" it .
The program allows many options, including the ability to edit or even
"restore" to the way it was when you got the computer .

Here's the reply I got from MSN Messenger Help:

Thank you for contacting MSN Messenger Technical Support. My name is Irene, and I am pleased to assist you with this problem. I regret any inconvenience this has caused, and understand how important it is to keep in touch with your friends and family using MSN Messenger.

According to your email, you are unable to sign into your MSN Messenger , you are getting error messages: " Proxy settings or Key Ports ", and "unable to clean up the hosts file thats interfering with name resolution".

The following conditions may apply:

- Firewall settings are blocking MSN Messenger.

- MSN Messenger proxy settings are incorrect.

- Security settings are blocking MSN Messenger.

- Your date and time settings may be incorrect.

- You are trying to sign in by using an incorrect password or e-mail address.

- An anti-spyware program or an antivirus program may be conflicting with MSN Messenger.

- Files that are required to make a successful Internet connection are corrupted.

- You are using a portable computer and are experiencing a problem when you switch network environments.

Please follow these steps in the order they appear to help resolve this issue:

Try the following solutions in the order that they are listed:

1. Visit the following Web site to verify that you can connect to the Internet: http://www.microsoft.com
If you cannot connect, contact your Internet Service provider or your local network administrator.

2. If you receive an error message that references your sign-in name or password, go to step 11.

3. Use the Connection Troubleshooter to fix the problem. To run the troubleshooter, follow these steps:
a. Start MSN Messenger.
b. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options."
c. Start the Connection Troubleshooter.

- MSN Messenger 7.5
-- Click "Connection," and then click "Start" under "Connection Troubleshooter."

d. Follow the steps in the Connection Troubleshooter to identify and fix the sign-in issues.

4. Determine whether MSN Messenger is blocked by a firewall. Visit the following Web site to sign in to Web Messenger:
http://webmessenger.msn.com/

Click Start Web Messenger, and verify whether you can sign in. If you can sign in to Web Messenger, MSN Messenger may be blocked by a firewall. If the computer is running third-party (non-Microsoft) software or firewall software, such as ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee, make sure that the software is set to let MSN Messenger operate, and then try to sign in to MSN Messenger again. Visit the following Web site for information about the most common firewalls:
http://messenger.msn...elp/issues.aspx

5. Adjust the proxy settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the "Tools" menu, click "Internet Options."
c. Click the "Connections" tab, and then click "LAN Settings."
d. Clear the "Automatically detect settings" check box.
e. Click "OK" two times.

6. Clear the proxy settings in MSN Messenger:

- MSN Messenger 7.5
a. Start MSN Messenger 7.5.
b. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options."
c. Click "Connection," and then click "Advanced Settings."
d. Delete the entries under "SOCKS."
e. Click "OK" two times to save the settings.

7. Adjust the Microsoft Internet Explorer security settings:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the "Tools" menu, click" Internet Options," and then click the "Advanced" tab.
c. In the "Security" section, verify the following settings:
-Clear the "Check for server certificate revocation" check box.
-Select the "Use SSL 2.0" check box.
-Select the "Use SSL 3.0" check box.

d. Click "OK" to close the window.
e. Reregister SSL security libraries. To do this, click "Start," click "Run," and then follow the steps for the operating system that you are using.

Note: After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before you continue to the next command.

-Microsoft Windows XP
i. Type %windir%\system32\REGSVR32 softpub.dll, and then press ENTER.
ii. Type %windir%\system32\REGSVR32 wintrust.dll, and then press ENTER.
iii. Type %windir%\system32\REGSVR32 initpki.dll, and then press ENTER.

f. If you are running Windows XP, clear the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) state and the AutoComplete history:
i. Start Internet Explorer.
ii. On the "Tools" menu, click "Internet Options," and then click the "Content" tab.
iii. Under "Certificates," click "Clear SSL State."
iv. When you receive the message that states that the SSL cache was successfully cleared, click "OK."

8. If you are using MSN Messenger 7.5, try the following additional steps:
a. MSN Messenger may fail to connect because the security certificates to connect to the Microsoft Passport Network are out-of-date. Double-click the clock in the notification area, and then make sure that the date and time settings on your computer are correct.
b. MSN Messenger requires that the XML library files are registered correctly. Click "Start," click "Run," type the following command, and then click "OK":
%windir%\system32\regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll
You will receive a confirmation message when the registration is successfully completed.
c. If you were connected through a dial-up network and are now connecting through a different network that is not dial-up, verify your Internet connection settings:
i. Open an Internet Explorer window.
ii. On the "Tools" menu, click "Internet Options."
iii. In the Internet Options window, click the "Connections" tab.
iv. Make sure that "Always dial my default connection" is not selected. Make sure that "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" is selected.

9. If you have any anti-spyware programs that are running, try to disable them, and then verify that you can sign in to MSN Messenger. If you can sign in to MSN Messenger, contact the software manufacturer or see the software documentation to determine how to fix the conflicting issue.

10. Try to sign in to MSN Messenger again.

11. If you receive an error message that is related to your sign-in name or password, make sure that you are using the correct user name and password to sign in to MSN Messenger. To verify that you can log on to any site by using the same credentials, visit http://www.passport.com. Click "Sign In." If you are successfully signed in, you will see the "Sign Out" button. If this step does not work, try to change or reset your password. To do this, visit https://login.passpo...et/default.srf/. If this method works, continue to make sure that the same user e-mail address and password are being used to log on to MSN Messenger. To make sure that you are using the correct credentials in MSN Messenger, follow these steps:

- MSN Messenger 7.5
a. In the MSN Messenger sign-in window, clear the "Remember my password" check box to make the "Password" box available.
b. Type the password.
c. Select "Remember my password" to store the new password.
d. Select "Sign me in automatically" to turn on automatic sign-in.

12. Update the files that are required for authentication. The correct files will be reinstalled when you next sign in. Follow these steps to delete these files:
a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK to open a Command Prompt window.
b. At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command line to execute the command.
cd %allusersprofile%\application data\microsoft\identitycrl\*.*
Del *.dll

Note: If any files exist in this folder, you will be prompted to confirm. If you are prompted, press Y. Otherwise, ignore the information.

cd %appdata%\microsoft\identitycrl\*.*
del *.dll

Note: If any files exist in this folder, you will be prompted to confirm. If you are prompted, press Y. Otherwise, ignore the information.

13. If you still cannot sign in to MSN Messenger, the .NET Messenger Service may be temporarily unavailable. Wait several minutes, and then try to sign in again. Or, visit http://messenger.msn.com/status.aspx to find out the status of the server.

I am hopeful that the issue is now resolved. However, if the issue persists it would be best to collect some additional information to better assist us in diagnosing the problem further. Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability:

- What steps did you complete, and when did the process fail?
- What is the exact error message that you received?
- Does the error message that you received include a hexadecimal code? What is the hexadecimal
code number--for example, 0x81000308?
- When did this issue first occur?
- Did you make any changes on the system or on the computer before the problem occurred?
- Can you sign in to your account on another computer?
- Can you sign in to another account on the same computer?
- Are any third-party applications installed on the computer--for example, Messenger Plus,
SmileyCentral from FunWebProducts.com, Handwriting, or Hotbar?

Additionally, any other details or information you could provide might help us to resolve this issue more quickly with more refined instructions.

By the way, you are able to learn how to use all the features in your MSN Messenger just by going to http://messenger.msn.com

Thanks again for contacting MSN Messenger Technical Support, and for your use of Microsoft products. Have a wonderful evening.

Best Regards,

Irene

Ok everyone, here's the deal.

Newer MSN's seem to have an issue with the %temp% folder.

Before installing your new sparkling version of MSN MESSENGER, you should always go and do this first :

start/run/%temp%

This will give you a folder. Delete everything in there. Dont worry, nothing important. If it says a file is in use, reboot, and do it again.

I have my temp folder cleared at every bootup, using a .bat file i created.

Anyways, once ur temp folder is cleared, install MSN.

You should find, with delight, that MSN is now working.

( Well, thats the only problem i ever had with my MSN, and it works everytime ... as for spyware, i'd be surprized, cause MSN can be used to convey some to other computers.... but be sure to do your scans, just in case )

Hope this helps.
