Hello - I'm having lots of problems with this winfixer 2005 thing. I went through all the steps outlined in the "before you post" section but it's still giving me problems.

I'm not able to get beyond the safe mode stage. This is probably something stupid but I don't know a great deal about computers. When I start up in safe mode the screen is just totally black with text saying "safe mode" in each corner - I don't even have a start menu so I don't know how to get to VundoFix on my desktop. I am able to move my mouse around without any lag time and I can use *ctrl + alt + delete* to get that menu up... so I know that the computer has started up completely but I don't know what to do from there since I can't access anything else.

When my computer first starts up it gives me the option to log in using my windows account (which is what I always use and does have administrative abilities) or another one that is named "administrator" that doesn't usually appear there. I thought maybe if I logged on with the administrator account I would have better luck but I don't know what the password to it is! I logged back on my account to go to the add/remove users menu so I could change the password to this new administrator account, but it doesn't seem to think it exists. I don't know what to do - I hope this makes sense

OK, lets see what we can do.

1. Start the computer as you would normally.

2. You need to open the MSConfig menu
* Click Start
* Click Run
* In the Run dialog box type "msconfig" and press enter to start the MSCONFIG utility.

3. For our purposes, we just want to use MSCONFIG to boot into SafeMode so we can run our antivirus software scan or a virus / worm removal tool to get rid of malware on the system.

4. If you click on the Boot.ini tab you will see some checkboxes at the bottom under Boot Options.
* Click the checkbox next to /SAFEBOOT and select Minimal
* After you make the changes the computer will need to be rebooted for the changes to take effect.
* The computer will boot into SafeMode and allow you to do what you need to do to clean any malware or other malicious software from your system.

5. Once you have completed the actions or tasks you needed to use SafeMode for, you need to reopen MSCONFIG following the instructions above and uncheck the /SAFEMODE box under Boot Options so that the computer will boot into normal Windows mode the next time you start it up.

Once you have rebooted your system into SafeMode, please follow the directions I have given for removing Vundo.

Then post back a new HJT log by using Add Reply.

I've already tried entering safe mode through msconfig - that won't work either. For some reason the computer just isn't letting me get into safe mode. I have two identical systems and the virus free one can enter in and out of safe mode with ease, but the sick one just won't allow it.

What happens is I try to enter safemode and the popup box that always comes up saying I'm about to enter safemode, etc and should give me two options, flashes real quick (instead of giving me time to read it and select on option) and then goes away. After that I'm just left with a black screen reading "safe mode" in each corner but with no actual desktop. So I'm unable to access VundoFix or anything else.

One time, when the popup box flashed I just hit the enter key really quick hoping it would select the "yes" option and take me into safe mode before the box went away. Sure enough, it worked and my whole desktop appeared in safe mode just like I wanted it to. I pulled out the printed copy of my instructions which you gave me to make sure I knew what I was supposed to do next but as I was reading, the computer somehow popped up that same box again and went away before I could do anything about it and then took me back to the dreaded empty black screen again. I tried to restart into safe mode again hitting enter as fast as possible when the box appears but have had no such luck again. I know I'm hitting the key fast enough - it seems it just only let that work once or something.

• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Open HijackThis and perform a scan, then place a checkmark next to each of the following items: (if present)

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Next do the following.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe,
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.
