The other day, I added another computer to my office network. Once I had all the updates completed, I've had random crashes. The latest gives this message:

stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80566D34, 0xF8159B24, 0x00000000)

Anyone know what's going on here?

http://search.micros...&qu=0x0000008E

this is a search result from microsoft for that stop code...it has a lot of potential causes...from ram issues to driver conflicts...unfortunately that stop code is a little bit too vague for a direct comparrison.

is taht the full message from the BSOD?

Thanks for the quick reply. No it said something about drivers, but I didn't write it down, sorry. When I restarted, I got this one:

stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF99C3904, 0xF99C3600, 0x806ED134)

Using the same search as above, this one says something about NTFS issues.
Am I in too deep here. Should I format and reinstall, or is this fixable?

it's a non descript error...so it could be anything.....i wouldn't format reinstall...maybe just a repair install of windows....had you also updated anyhardware after the windows updates?

Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the "C" and "R" repair options by presssing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually get an option to "Repair an existing installation". That's the one you want. If it asks about formatting you've gone wrong, so start over.

You'll get to keep your existing apps & settings, but you need to re-install SP2, Windows Updates & any unsigned drivers afterwards. NOTE: Be aware that you'll lose any protection from Blaster / Sasser type worms. Don't go online without a firewall, whether the built in Windows one or 3rd party.

well that's a more familiar error code..that is almost always a driver or memory issue...

memtest went through 1 pass with no errors reported. The only thing that has changed in the past few days was I updated from SP1 to SP2, installed ZoneAlarm, Adaware, Spybot, and AVG, and increased the memory to 256MB so I could hook the computer to the router to use the printer. After that, it has been nothing but problems.

did you increase the memory to 256 by adding another 128 chip? or did you pull out the old chip and put in a 256 chip?

looks like that might have been it. Since there were no errors reported, does tha mean a compatiblity issue. Forgive the novice questions, I got thrown into being the office IT guy because I'm the only one who knew how to use a computer, not because I know what I'm doing.
