I have windows xp, sp2, and recently have been experiencing really slow start-ups. I will see the desktop background but it will take close to 5 minutes or so for the icons and start bar to appear. If you have any suggestions of the cause and possible cures thanks.

I did the defragmentation, and I am still having slow start-ups. I recently installed a new program called Pinnacle Game profiler. I will try uninstalling it and seeing if that corrects the problem. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would welcome your opinion.

It would help if we knew that your system spec were, what you had running at startup (a hijack log would help), and any errors you see in event viewer during boot up

start > run, type
eventvwr.msc
<enter>

Look under systems and applications for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your problem...list them here.

Dreylivude...

You might also check if you have any scans running on startup...

Click start then run, type msconfig then press enter then start up, look through this list to remove the ticks from any programmes which are not essential to the PC starting, click apply then reboot, when it gets to the desktop, tick do not start the configuration utility when Windows starts

Make sure your firewall and antivirus programmes, along with any anti spyware applications are still running properly

The programmes you remove the ticks for will just take longer to start when you go to run them

If you remove the tick from a programme you need, replace the tick, click apply and reboot

Well, there are a ton of sony vaio programs...do you really need them? The Pinnacle updater I am not familiar with, but does it need to run at start up? I doubt it.

Other than that, I see no evidence of spyware, but you have a ton of crap running at startup

ok, but I'm not really sure what to stop. I don't want to stop a critical program

Provided you check the firewall is on, with the AV and antispyware then you can start a PC with an always on connection, msconfig / start up mainly deals with the programmes which run at start up, not critical processes

As before, if you remove the wrong tick, replace it

Although time consuming, remove the ticks one or two at a time to assess the effect on the PC
