Hello everyone (or anyone)!

I've had a look in past threads on here and it seems to be known problem. I will however start and continue with the correct steps.

This infection has changed my homepage to "updateyoursystem.com". Which is effectively a malware/spyware warning page.

The actual name of the infection is:

Spyware: "stealthSWs114.h!dll"
ver: 4.442as18a
accessport: 33299

Have taken the steps in the "pre HijackThis Log" first steps guide (as follows):

Clean Up
Ad Aware SE
CWShredder
Spybot S&D
Ewido Security Suite - Report Log later in this correspondence.
Trend Housecall - unable to clean C:\\Windows\system32\mscornet.exe
- Virus : Troj zlob.al
- Scan Result : CanNotAccess
TrojanHunter
WindowsUpdate
ReBoot System

After these measures problem still persists.

Hi cew1 :)

Before we begin, just a few things. I notice you are running HijackThis (HJT) from your C:\ root folder. This is ok, but please note that HJT will create a backup folder in this location which keeps backups of any fixes we make. This is vital should we need to restore any changes. If you prefer, you could move HJT to a new folder such as C:\HJT. This might be better as the backup folder will then be a subfolder of C:\HJT :)

Also, your log tells me that all your internet access is being routed through a company called Energis UK based in Leeds, England. This might be correct, but if not (e.g. you do not live in the UK and your ISP is not based in the UK), then please tell me and we can address this issue :woot:

Ok, lets get cracking...

Preparation

1) Run Ewido and update the definitions to the latest level. Do NOT run a scan yet.

2) Right click Here and select Save As to download DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop.

3) Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

4) Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

5) If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

The Fix

1) Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
  • You must sign onto Safe Mode under an account that has administrator privileges.
2) Run HJT and perform a scan. Place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {7288c0bd-7f2f-4229-a0c4-3c90a6e2a881} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE7B0.tmp
O9 - Extra button: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winantiviruspro.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winnanny.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winsoftware.com

Now close HiJackThis.

3) Right click on the deldomains.inf file that you downloaded earlier (it should be on the desktop) and click Install

4) Use Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following (if they exist) :

Empire Poker
Party Poker

5) Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. Please be patient, this can take some time.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

6) Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

7) Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

8) Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

9) Reboot back into normal Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

10) Please reply with the following information :
  • Panda scan report
  • Contents of smitfiles.txt (should be found in C:\)
  • Ewido Log
  • Fresh HijackThis log, taken after completing all instructions above
Also let me know how your system is running :tazz:

Hi infaddict! :tazz:

Taken all the steps you advised and I have to say so far, so good. My homepage has returned to Google and I no longer have any "infection" warnings dominating my screen. The appearance of my desktop though has changed from the XP look to the traditional look (this is not a big issue though).

Your query regarding my internet access. I am in the UK and my ISP is Wanadoo - I would assume this is an "arm" of Energis UK (for your information I have had no problems with Wanadoo at all in the past so again I assume this not a problem overall).

Thanks for your help so far!

Hi cew1, nice to speak to a fellow UK person :)

Great job so far! Just some tidy ups to do now....

Please delete the following infected files :

C:\Documents and Settings\Internet\Favorites\Free XXX Sites List.url

The appearance of my desktop though has changed from the XP look to the traditional look

This sometimes happens when we fix this infection. Please right-click on your desktop and click Properties. Click on the Appearance tab and set the theme to Windows XP. Click Ok and let me know if this restores your look and feel back to how you want it.

Finally, let me know how your system is running - if everything seems ok I can post back with some great prevention tips to keep you clean in the future :tazz:

Hello again infaddict!

I've had a play around on my system for an hour and no problems have occured. :tazz: (Although geekstogo.com is very slow this afternoon. - Very busy I suppose).

What shall I do with the bits'n'pieces I've downloaded and the scan logs/reports to sort this problem? Worth keeping?

Any final advice on continuing the improvement of my computers defences and prevent something like this happening again would be much appreciated.

Thankyou again for taking the time to look into my computers problem and it's subsequent rectification.

Regards

Hi Christian :)

Yep, G2G has been slow for me also this afternoon... very busy at the moment.

You can delete all the tools and logs as hopefully you won't need them again :)

Now for the good news and the important prevention tips...

Congratulations, your log is clean :tazz: .

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free :woot:

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:

Spyware Blaster Spyware Guard

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE--Adaware Tutorial

Spybot S&D--Spybot Tutorial

Antiviruses play an important role in keeping your computer safe and worry free while using the net. *NOTE* Only one antivirus must be allowed to run on your computer, as having two or more running can and will cause conflicts.

AVG Avast

Firewalls are also a must in any good prevention :

Zone Alarm Sygate Kerio

There are different browsers available on the net, other than Internet Explorer, we believe!! these are better for security purposes :

Firefox Opera

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

This can be accessed by going to Windows Updates and following the prompts.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :

Rav Online Scan Housecall Online Scan Panda Activescan

Housecall Java Online Scan<---For those who use Firefox, or opera.

And finally a little Posted Image How did I get infected in the first place ? (by Mr. Tony Klein and dvk01)

Good luck and safe surfing :woot:
