I ran norton antivirus and it said I had trojan.vundo but it was unable to delete it. I also ran the anti-spyware programs this site to. After all that when ever my computer is on there is a popup in the lower corner that says my computer is infected. If I click on it, it tries to install spyaxe. Also Internet explorer seems to have a mind of its own. Please help me. Here is my Hijack this log

Hi Voltez5.0 :)

I can't see any signs of Vundo in your log, but you are infected with Smitfraud, Epolvy and possible a Winik rootkit infection. There are also a few other things we need to deal with. Please understand it may take several iterations before we see any progress - I encourage you to stick with me and follow my instructions carefully :)

Lets try to hit as much as we can in one go. There's a lot to do but it's worth it :woot:

Please print out these instructions as you will not have access to the internet during parts of the fix. If you do not have a printer, please save these instructions to Notepad.

Preparation

1) Download WinKRootKitRemover to your desktop

2) Download Silent Runners to your desktop.

3) Download Registry Search.zip by Bobbi Flekman and Save it to your desktop. Then extract the contents to your desktop (this should give you a regsearch.exe on your desktop).

4) Download APT to your desktop

5) Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

6) Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

7) Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

8) If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

9) Download and install CleanUp!

10) To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

The Fix

1) Run WinKRootKitRemover from your desktop
  • Double Click the icon to open the program
  • Then, click RUN and then START
  • Save the log it creates to your desktop.
.

2) Run SilentRunners from your desktop
  • Double Click on the Silent Runners.vbs icon to open the program
  • Then click OPEN and YES in the next screen.
  • Let the program run its course. It will tell you when it has finished its work
  • This will generate a text file on your desktop called "Startup Programs ...".
  • Save this report for your next reply here.
3) Launch Notepad
  • Copy/paste the content of the codebox below into a new text file.
  • Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop and as type"All Files"

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
winik

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLU

4) Run regsearch
  • Click regsearch.exe to start the program.
  • Click on "Import" and Select the file "Options.txt" that you created above.
  • Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds.
  • Post the results into your next reply. Save the log somewhere safe just in case
5) Run APT

We are going to use APT to help us kill the Epolvy trojan. Note that this pesky trojan changes its filenames frequently - I am using the filenames specified in your last log. If the filenames have mutated since then, you will not be able to find these files in APT or in Windows Explorer. If this happens (and only if this happens), you can run HijackThis, perform a scan and look for the 04 prefixed entries that refer to a random filename in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Use these filenames in the instructions. The entries always end with a 'r'. For example :
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rjbsvpn] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayieui.exe r

Open apt and search in the window for the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayieui.exe.
Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayieui.exe
Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
In APT again, Select C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayieui.exe and Click Kill3

Then immediately delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayieui.exe from your system32 folder.

Repeat the above procedure again for these files :

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qotsyjl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmzjtyd.exe

:tazz: Hi, good job so far :)

Did you remove Spy Axe from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs? I can still see it in your log. Spy Axe is rogue antispyware and is known to perform desktop hijacking as well as using misleading and aggressive advertising. Read this page and look for Spy Axe for further information.

Let's try some more things...

Download SpyAxeFix.exe © noahdfear. Save it to your desktop. Close all other programs and windows. Double click SpyAxeFix.exe, then click Start to extract the tool to it's own folder.

Now run Hijack this and perform a scan. Place a check next to the following entries :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyAxe] C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h

Close all other windows and browsers other than HijackThis and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Open the SpyAxeFix folder and double click the SpyAxeFix.bat to start the tool. At one point when the tool runs, your taskbar will dissappear, and your computer will restart when the tool completes. A text file named spyaxe.txt will be created in the SpyAxeFix folder.

Post the contents of that log in your next reply please.

Also, please redo the Panda Activescan online scan and post back with the new log.

Finally, also please provide a fresh HijackThis log after doing all of the above. Don't forget to tell me how your system is now running (any popups etc)?

:)

Thanks. Spyaxe was reinstalling itself and would start running at random times. That last fix seemed to get rid of it. The pop up saying my computer was infected with spyware is gone. Internet explorer also is back to its regular self. Active scan says I still have a virus. That is the only evidence I still see of malware. Thanks again for your help. Here are the reports you requested.

1. Activescan

Hi voltez5.0 :)

Please delete this file :

C:\Documents and Settings\Tom Faux\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive1213.jar-507743fb-3f9e8293.zip

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
Your new HJT log is clean :tazz: Let me know how your system is running and if everything is ok, I can post back with some great prevention tips to keep you clean in future!

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free :tazz:

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:

Spyware Blaster Spyware Guard

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE--Adaware Tutorial

Spybot S&D--Spybot Tutorial

Antiviruses play an important role in keeping your computer safe and worry free while using the net. *NOTE* Only one antivirus must be allowed to run on your computer, as having two or more running can and will cause conflicts.

AVG Avast

Firewalls are also a must in any good prevention :

Zone Alarm Sygate Kerio

There are different browsers available on the net, other than Internet Explorer, we believe!! these are better for security purposes :

Firefox Opera

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

This can be accessed by going to Windows Updates and following the prompts.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :

Rav Online Scan Housecall Online Scan Panda Activescan

Housecall Java Online Scan<---For those who use Firefox, or opera.

And finally a little Posted Image How did I get infected in the first place ? (by Mr. Tony Klein)

Good luck and safe surfing :)
