My PC is infected with some types of spyware, trojans, and/or viruses. My OS is Win XP SP1, and I use Norton Anti-Virus 2005, and the free version 5.1.001 of Zone Alarm as my firewall.

After running Ad-Aware, Spybot, Trojan Hunter, ewido, CW Shredder, CleanUp, Trend Housecall, etc., it appears that perhaps the only symptom remaining now is that IE is bveing frequently hijacked to some sites offering me spyware protection and to other marketing sites as well, which may mean that surfsidekick is still lurking in my system.

Please print out these directions for use if/when you do not have access to this page.

This will be a many step process, maybe consisting of many tries and scans. But don't worry, we'll get it!

You have the latest version of VX2 (among other infections that we will take care of later). Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the desktop icons dont dissappear or the log does not pop up then in the l2mfix folder double click the second.bat file to continue with the fix.

We have a problem.
The infected PC belongs to me wife. I'm sending you this post from my PC on our home LAN because we are unable to access the internet from her PC after running the second.bat fix with l2mfix. We've tried using both IE and Firefox to access the net, but we're not getting any connection to the router. From my wife's PC I tried to access the router's IP address, but when I typed in the router's IP address, it "morphed" into some kind of search address for surfsidekick.com!

Any suggestions on what to do now?

I'm also unable to access her files from my PC thru our LAN for some reason, so I've copied the l2mix second bat fix log (right before the internet access problem) and the new HJT log (after the internet access problem)

Should I do a system restore to perhaps yesterday's settings?

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Since your wife cannot access the internet, you can download the file on your computer, burn it to a disk, and put it on her computer that way. But, do NOT run it yet.

The rest of these instructions are taking place on the infected PC

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.


Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder, if internet connectivity returns. If not, post the same way you last posted.

I'm trying to reboot her PC in SAFE mode; however, when I depress F8 during the restart I get a small menu window asking me which drive I want to boot from. Regardless of which option I select, the PC continues to start up right into the normal, full Win XP operating system.

Is there perhaps another Function key I should try besides F8?

Next, scan with HJT, and place a check next to the following items if present:

This fresh post is coming from my wife's infected PC.
We really needed to access the internet with my wife's PC, so I did a system restore back to 22 Nov (at a point before we ran the scan on this PC using l2mifix).
Next, I applied your instructions at Post #13 regarding removal of Surfsidekick, which worked fine, and somehow our internet access has been restored. Why the internet access is now working is a mystery to me, but it's likely to be very obvious to your sharp eyes!
