In Windows Explorer I was unable to delete the problem file.

Instead, the following alert box appeared:

"Cannot delete awtqp: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be unsing the file and try again."

First Download this file to your desktop:

After it's downloaded, you will need 6 floppy disks.

Double-click winxpsp1_en_hom_bf.exe

Insert a floppy into your drive.

In the black window that's open, type a

It will tell you when you need to insert a new disk.
NOTE: Keep track of the order of the disks because you have to start with disk #1, then #2 and so forth.

First you need to create a dummy file.
Using Windows Explorer, open the C:\windows\system32 directory. Right click an open space and go to New > Text Document.
When Notepad opens, go up to File > Save As. Click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files".
Name the text file awtqp.old and save it in the system32 directory.
Close all windows and programs.
Slip in Floppy disk #1 and reboot.
Upon boot up, you may receive 'Press any key to boot from floppy' if you do, then press any key.
You will be prompted for each disk.
After the last disk has loaded, setup will stop at an options screen.
Choose R.
You will be prompted for the Administrator password. If none was set, press enter.
You will be offered which installation to start, eg;
1. C:\Windows
Press 1 and enter.
You will arrive at a C:\Windows prompt.

Type and hit enter after each line:

attrib -r -h -s C:\windows\system32\awtqp.dll
del /q C:\windows\system32\awtqp.dll
rename C:\windows\system32\awtqp.old C:\windows\system32\awtqp.dll
exit

The machine will restart. Either take the floppy out right away or do not touch any keys until you get to the Welcome screen so that it skips the boot from floppy option.

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Sgooter, again, please locate C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqp.dll. Once found, right click it and select properties. Find out the file size of that file, and post it here.

Just to be clear about your request for the size of C:\windows\system32\awtqp.dll: I answered this question via Post #54: size = 27.0KB; size on disk = 28.0KB.

Do you want me to check and report the size of this file again or did you not receive my previous post?

I'll be home around 5pm, and can provide a new reply then, if needed. BTW, I may have located a CD of Win XP Home Edition, but it won't be available to me until tomorrow evening. Is it still desired for use in attacking the malware problem?

Sgooter. Yes, please check and submit the file size again. Also, if you can yes, try to borrow that XP disc. Depending on what the filesize is, you may or maynot still have the infection. If you do still have the infection, we will use that disc for removal.

Hi Matt,
I've been out of the house for a few hours this evening.

I did a fresh check on the problem file, and I can confirm the file size shown is 28.0KB.

I should have an XP Home Edition CD available tomorrow evening, though at this point I don't know whether it's an Win XP upgrade CD or the full Win XP OS CD.

Also, this PC is actually behaving much better these days; however, I still get the alert box (described at the beginning of Post #20) at each start up, which some folks have assessed as some form of malware infection.
