Windows XP Security Pack 2 won't install - won't overwrite a couple files (including wininet.dll)

still being notified by Norton of the same virus - additionally, some asinine "WorldAntiSpy" something or other keeps downloading itself onto my computer and installing - pop ups still keep happening - I am beyond frustrated and angry PLEASE HELP!!!!

Your windows are seriously out of date! Follow the step below and post back the results and before we can finish your cleanup we will have to get you service pack 1 first (Not sevice pack 2) Make sure you post back before going to get the service pack


Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

Reboot and post the smitfiles.txt log and a hijack log

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"

  If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
• From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
• Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
• When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
• I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

Delete these two files

C:\Program Files\KaZaA\bdcore.dll <<<<<< This file is adware and deleting it may cause Kazaa not to function properly.I always recommend uninstalling Kazaa as it is a virus farm, but that is your choice If you are still going to use it you may need to leave this file

After that your log looks great. Are you getting any popups or other problems?

OK done with that.

I had stopped using Kazaa about a year ago anyway - so I ended up uninstalling and deleting the rest of the file folder in Program Files to get rid of everything - I have no idea why I had even left it on my computer, but it's gone now.

I then deleted the gendel32.exe file.

No, I only had problems with popups when this problem first started and have not had any since I ran all the initial programs before posting my first HiJack This log (thankfully).

I am also pleased to hear that you were happily surprised at the Panda Scan log - I guess I have been able to avoid a lot by running adaware weekly for about a year now.

Anything else before I install SP2?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:
AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.

The microsoft update had me update SP1 files before it let me install SP2, but I now have SP2 on my computer.

I also downloaded and installed the ZoneAlarm firewall.

I will be sure and read the articles you linked to this weekend.
