not yet, but we are a lot closer :tazz:

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Reset your host file. Click Here to download HostsFileReader. To reset the host file to default, simply open the program, click the "reset default" button, and confirm the changes.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

*** Your log is clean ***

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Thanks! My PC is almost bulletproof, but my wife never paid her's much mind. I only ran across this problem after upgrading to DSL yesterday and setting her computer up. I have already added SpySweeper and will get a HOST file setup now to help block parasites. I certainly appreciate your help! What is the customary donation?

the customary donation is whatever you feel it should be.

One nice part is I just saved you from the loss of your computer for a week or two for taking it into a shop to do this, and about $200 if you had had GeekSquad come out to your house to do this.

so you do what you feel comfortable with, even if it;s just a thank you.

Well here is a great big THANK YOU and smaller monetary one has been sent! :-) I probably would have just formatted and did a clean install of XP on it had you not been here. Of course, I would have never heard the end of it from the better half. <g> BTW, the donation is from nsharber_at_bigfoot_dot_com

Glad I could help.

Since you are on DSL It would be a great Idea to invest in a Firewall, even when your not surfing the net, if your machine is on, you can get your computer infected or hacked into.

since it appears this topic is resolved, I am closing this thread, if you are the original poster and need it reopened please contact a staff member, with a link to this thread, requesting it to be reopened.

If your not the original poster, please start a new topic.

good luck and happy computing :tazz:
