I'm just using the manual update method via microsoft downloads and all is well at the moment.

Yes, correct. I let my windows update specify what i need to download and when the original problem arises re not be able to download them automatically (java error by the sounds in IE), i just download them manually. Easy and you can do it a little more safely that way, with internet and other progs turned off etc.
