Yet another winfixer victim.

While you're responding... can you tell me why this is happening? Why doesn't adaware or spybot fix this? What does Vundo do? Why the safe mode stuff, etc.

Also, and this is a serious question, why is it that some viruses that spread around the world get the FBI involved, while Winfixer is causing lots of people a bunch of grief, and it is legal? I'd like to send somebody to jail.....

I notice you are running McAfee Anti Virus - this is a good thing because an Antivirus is a must. However, it is not clear from your log if you are running a Firewall. A Firewall is vital because it blocks unauthorised internet access both to and from your computer. Note that the built in Windows firewall is not sufficient.

If you have the McAfee firewall, please ensure it is active and running. If you do not, then please download a good free Firewall such as ZoneAlarm. Install it and follow the on screen prompts and tutorial. ZoneAlarm will popup an alert each time a program tries to access the internet - if you do not recognise this program, deny it access.

Once ZoneAlarm is fully installed, please continue...

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode. Note that when using Safe Mode, you must use a user account with Administrator privileges. If you only have one account (or don't even choose an account from the welcome screen), then this will usually have admin rights.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan. Note you may be prompted to download and install an ActiveX control - this is fine.

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks for the tips. While the Panda scan is completing, let me ask a few questions.

Why can't i just check the box in HJT to remove the entry? Why the Safe Mode and Vundo?
Why doesn't Ad Aware or Spybot kill WinFixer?
I ran a complete mcafee AV scan, and it seemed to delete the vtstt.dll file. Is that enough?
You questioned my firewall situation. I have 3 computers on a LAN behind a DLink router connected to a cable modem. Online security scans have said that I'm "invisible". I thought the router would be enough firewall protection, so I don't use Windows Firewall. What additional value would Zonelarm give me? Do you recommend it in my situation?

And finally, if writing and distributing a Netsky.B virus would summon the FBI to my house, why isn't WinFixer against the law?

Thanks for your reply... however, I can't see the contents of the vundofix.txt file. Your reply seems to go from the title of the Vundofix straight into the Panda log (I would expect 1 to 2 pages of Vundofix log). Please can you post the full contents of the vundofix.txt file in your next reply? Cheers.

Why doesn't Ad Aware or Spybot kill WinFixer?

The WinFixer infection (aka Vundo, Virtumonde, Crypt etc.) is fairly sophisticated and employs advanced tactics such as using processes to monitor itself and detect removal and also hooking itself into winlogon procedure. This means that simple registry or HJT fixes will not work. A well respected expert created a special fix (called Vundofix) which helps us hit this infection. It does all the hard work so we don't have to . We run it in safe mode as this maximises the chances of success, due to minimal drivers and other things being loaded.

I ran a complete mcafee AV scan, and it seemed to delete the vtstt.dll file. Is that enough?

From your latest log, it appears the files may now be deleted, but the reg entries remain - we can fix that next.

You questioned my firewall situation. I have 3 computers on a LAN behind a DLink router connected to a cable modem. Online security scans have said that I'm "invisible". I thought the router would be enough firewall protection, so I don't use Windows Firewall. What additional value would Zonelarm give me? Do you recommend it in my situation?

I'm not an expert on hardware firewalls, so can't really comment on your setup. If you are happy you have adequate protection from both incoming and outgoing threats then you don't need to install ZoneAlarm.

And finally, if writing and distributing a Netsky.B virus would summon the FBI to my house, why isn't WinFixer against the law?

I'm with you on this one. Millions of people are affected by Malware every year and congress are starting to take notice. You can always sign this petition to help the cause.


On with the fix :

1) Please open HJT, do a scan and check the following items :

2) To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

• Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
• Double-click on the My Computer icon.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• After the new window appears select the View tab.
• Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
• Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
• Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

3) Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate and delete the following infected files :

Hi, your log looks clean

How is your computer running? Any more popups?

The popups from winfixer are gone.

I would say the computer runs fair; often the other users in the family complain about stuff. I had to reinstall Kodak EasyShare after it was consistently not responding. (perhaps it had to do with all of the winfixer stuff, i don't know). Also, I think AOL software is a hog, and isn't very friendly to the computer. Sometimes it is very slow to start. Also I have wireless B on the computer that goes out when the microwave in the kitchen starts, which disconnects AOL.

If you have any advise on those, we can start another thread. But I think things are ok.

Each user account can have different settings and programs that can run on startup. If other users are getting symptoms (e.g. popups, freezing) then please reply with a HijackThis log from that account. I can then take a look at it and decide if action is needed on that account. Post back with multiple HJT logs if necessary.

Wow, I guess the microwave signals must be interfering with the wireless signals . Don't think I can help with that - you could try posting in the networking forum to see if those experts have any suggestions.
