Spyware loaded that creates 2 warnings in system tray....both warning of spyware and offering to direct me to recommended spyware removal programs. Warnings cannot be closed or exited, they immediately return and clicking on them opens IE to SpyAxe website and SpyAxe programs begins a scan. SpyAxe.exe is loaded on desktop. Also getting popup ads even when IE not open and random popup warnings. Initial McAfee Scan determined a Puper.dll spyware program but could not clean, delete, or quarantine. I've seen a few other recent postings with this same problem. I've tried many things to remove problem without success. Ie: Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, McAfee Virus Scanner, Edwido Security Suite, Microsoft AntiSpyware, CWShredder, DOS scan with latest engine +DAT file. I have made changes to show hidden files....need help

Hi cpgrad,

Before starting any cleaning steps, please disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:
  • Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
  • Click on "Security Agents Status".
  • Click on "Disable real-time protection".
Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
  • Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
  • Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
  • Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
  • Click the Save button.
Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

Next, Please disable SpywareGuard, as it may interfere with some of our HijackThis fixes:

Right click the SpywareGuard icon in the System Tray at the bottom-right corner of the screen and open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

You can reenable both programs once your system is clean.

You are currently running HijackThis from your Desktop. Since HijackThis makes backups of any entries you fix, you should create a folder just to hold the HijackThis program and its backups, so the backups and the program are not accidentally deleted. Go to "My Computer", click on c:\ and then go to the "File" menu, choose New -> Folder. Name the folder "HJT" or something like that and then please move the HijackThis.exe executable there.

Now, let's get on with the fix :tazz:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks,
Nick :)

Hey Nick...

Now I seem to have some bigger problem. :tazz: Before running thru your checklist the spyaxe program did not seem to be reappearing and I had access to IE. I wanted you guys to make sure it was all cleaned out before I let it go. I ran thru your list exactly...now after rebooting out of safe mode, I cannot connect to IE. I have even tried reinstalling the backup of the removed HiJack files...nothing. Need help. Attaching Hijack , Ewido reports and smitfiles.txt. Could not run Panda scan since I could not connect. The only file in HijAck that didn't match up exact was :

02 - BHO: HomepageBHO - etc..... - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7617.tmp

instead it looked like this:

02 - BHO: (no name) - etc...... - (no file)

Also, when I initially rebooted I got two warnings:

RTL : Could not run HPHip09.exe

and

McAfee Privacy Service database missing or corrupt

I have tried turning computer off/on again...no warnings on reboot but still not able to connect to IE.

Hi cpgrad,

I'm really sorry for the delay.

We'll start off by running the WinSockFix utility to repair your connection.
WinsockXPFix for Windows XP/2000/NT.

Tell me how it goes.

Thanks,
Nick :tazz:

Hi Nick,

Thanks for getting back to me...sory if I'm a bit impatient. Before I do anything though, I want to update you again....don't understand why but I took my laptop to office, connected to IE by a direct connection to office network via network cable. Now I'm home and laptop is connecting fine on the wireless network. Can't explain it. I tried several tikmes last night. What shouyld we do now?

Hi Bill,

I'm happy to hear you regained your internet connection. :tazz:

Skip the WinsockXPFix and can you please provide me a fresh HijackThis log?

Thanks,
Nick :)

Hi Nick,

Not sure why things are working now but I guess I shouldn't complain. FYI It was my wireless connection that stopped working at someone else's home, haven't been back since. Wonder if it will work again when I'm there next? What do you think?

Never finished the other steps after the safety mode reboot but I have done a Panda Scan prior to hearing back from you. Let me know if there is anything more I should do. I've also got remember to turn back on some of the security features we turned off and rehide the "hidden files".

Here new HiJack log:

Hi Bill,

All we have left to do is fix one entry in HijackThis.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place a check next to the following entry:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7caf96a2-c556-460a-988e-76fc7895d284} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {B942A249-D1E7-4C11-98AE-FCB76B08747F} (RealArcadeRdxIE Class) - http://games-dl.real...ArcadeRdxIE.cab
Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis remove the entry you checked.

Now, we will re-enable your protection programs.

Re-enable Spyware Guard.
Open Spyware Guard.
Select Options.
Make sure the following are checked:
Enable Real-Time canning
Enable Download Protection
Enable Browser Hijack Protection
-------------------------------------------------
Re-enable Microsoft Anti-Spyware
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Enable real-time protection".

Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

1. Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
2. Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
3. Check "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
4. Click the Save button.

Finally, we'll make sure your hidden files are properly hidden.

Disabling the Viewing of Hidden and System Files
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect Show hidden files and folders
  • Select Hide file extensions for known types
  • Select Hide protected operating system files
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Congratulations, your HijackThis log appears to be CLEAN!!!

Here is a list of tools I like to suggest to users to prevent future infections.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware -Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
  • Firefox- Internet Explorer is NOT the most secure browser. I highly recommend Firefox as a safer alternative.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
