Hello, this is my first time using this forum! :tazz:

I've been having those terrible Winfixer pop-ups for a week or so now. However, I've run Ad-aware SE, Anti-Vir, and Spybot Search & Destory over and over, and my computer seems to be running better.
I'm still getting some pop-ups, the occasional one still being a Winfixer one (along with a slew of those, "play this game, win this prize" ones).

This was all fine until two very annoying things happened. First, my iPod will no longer show up on iTunes or iPod updater, but it does show up in Windows Explorer. I've tried extrensively to fix this problem, following all the instructions on Apple's site and even calling them up, but nothing worked, so they told me it was a Windows-related problem.

Also, now after I log onto my computer, I get an error (as a small pop-up with a ding sound) saying that NvQTwk.dll module could not be found, or something along those lines.

These two things happened within a day of each other, so I can't help but think that it's some virus/trojan that is causing the trouble. Ah, I almost forgot, I also have those highlighted links on websites, the "sponsored links" ones. I've had those before and found out it was adware, but I don't remember how I removed it. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and here's my HijackThis log:

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Once you have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log. Please be sure to include the header information in your new log.

Thanks for helping! :tazz:

Here's the new HijackThis log. I downloaded it again, and unzipped it into C:\HijackThis (its own folder), rebooted, and then ran it again.

Are you still using Norton as your antivirus?

Please follow these steps:
  • Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files
    • Click Start -> My Computer
    • Select Tools -> Folder options
    • Select the View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.
    • Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.
    • For more info on how to show hidden files click here.

  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

  • Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
    • If you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

  • Once in Safe mode, delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\Program Files\Ampfly <-- delete this folder
    C:\WINDOWS\oppmnivo.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ycccmr.exe
Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

I did as instructed. I did not find either the Ampfly folder or the two .exe files. Also, the three (no file) lines are still present on the HijackThis log. All hidden files and folders are showing. And I now use AntiVir is my main anti-virus, I no longer update Norton.

It's very important to only run one antivirus program at a time. I see signs of three in your log. This could be causing you problems.

Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called hxskedtsfrdi When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button(if available), then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

dltpwfye6

Now I need to see a different type of log from Hijackthis
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools section".
  • Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
  • Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Place the content of that file here in your in your next reply.

Are you still getting popups?

And thank you SOOO much for helping me. My computer is running much better in general, and my iPod now updates!! I suppose I just have to reinstall the NvQTwk.dll module somehow, and all will be back to normal. You've obviously earned your donation. :tazz: :) :)
Also, just wondering, how can I avoid this in the future?

That's good to hear! There's still a few more things that we can do for you. And I think we can resolve that error message as well.

I missed these two programs that you should uninstall.

Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. They are not malware. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OemReset] %systemroot%\OPTIONS\OEMRESET.EXE /AUDIT
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?
O23 - Service: NVIDIA Driver Helper Service (NVSvc) - NVIDIA Corporation - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe

You can also fix these lines.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3119534B-B6F0-2E48-FE8B-CFA0FDB3A765} - (no file)

And finally here's some recommendations for future prevention.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks again so much for your excellent help! One last question; In my Windows Security Center, the Firewall option is ON, telling me that I'm using Windows Firewall. Is this a sufficient firewall?
Also, just wondering if you thought AntiVir was an ok Anti-Virus program, I personally like it.
Anyways, thanks again, and hopefully I won't be dealing with you again soon! :tazz:

If you connect through a dial up connection then Windows Firewall is probably going to be fine for you. But if you use a broadband connection then I would recommend something with a little more backbone, like Zone Alarm.

Antivir is an adequate antivirus program as long as you don't rely on it alone for your protection. Follow the rest of the steps as outlined and keep everything updated. You should be fine.

Take care! :tazz:
