Hello,

I have had a problem with windows explorer for about a week now that I have tried to fix using various methods. Basically, it started suddenly and after no particular action on my part as far as I know.

Symptoms: originally I would get repeating, nonterminating error messages saying windows explorer has experienced an error, and upon closing that window by clicking send or don't send report, it would simply open another. Now, I get few messages but it continues to simply flash and refresh the screen or freeze up whenever I attempt to start any windows explorer related task, including simple file browsing on my computer. It does it about 50% of the time when simply browsing and about 90% of the time when i try to delete or copy/paste something. Internet Explorer is completely disabled and simply refuses to start, and does not give even an error message.

Actions I have taken:

reinstalled windows XP home edition
all current windows security/service pack updates
Norton Anti-Virus live updates and scans
all of the steps you mention in your getting started section (ad aware, spybot, cwshredder, etc. per your exact instructions)
browsing other posts that share similar problem.

i have found no definitive way to fix this and the problem has not ceased or lessened after any of the above approaches were taken.

Here is a copy of my hijack this:

You might want a new computer because something inside your internal drive has ran wild because if reinstalling isn't gonna work, nothing is.

Hi caradoc

Please set your system to show all files; see here for how to do this if you're unsure.

Please uninstall this Program: C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once -> Click Task Manager -> Click the Processes tab -> Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes -> Scroll through the list and look for:

C:\WINDOWS2\system32\pc32.exe bg

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process -> Exit the Task Manager

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {5AA06644-BC46-4220-A460-47A6EB47C96D} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSNSysRestore] C:\WINDOWS2\system32\pc32.exe bg
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe (HKCU)

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS2\system32\pc32.exe bg

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

Thanks, followed the steps but could find no evidence of a pc32.exe bg, either in safe mode or not, with hidden files showing.

Could not find the 04 [MSNSysRestore] either.

The problem still exists, which means I cannot access Internet Explorer, which is the only browser that supports the above two virus scans. When I try, it freezes up or does nothing.
