I'm having trouble removing surfer sidekick from my computer. I have removed most of its files and am not getting any more popup ads, but my it takes about 30 seconds before a new Internet Explorer window will respond to going to a new site.

I have run ewido, Ad-Aware, Spybot, & webroot spysweeper in safe mode to rid most of the infected files.

I ran Panda active scan and found ssk.log at the location C; Documents and Settings\Tim Erdmann\local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ssk.log

However when I went to that directory I could not find the file. I had all the hidden files shown in file options and looked under the two different usernames for the log for the computers.

Here is my Hijackthis log file

Welcome to Geekstogo :tazz:

Download Crap Cleaner from here or here.
Install and run it. The windows tab should be opened in the upper left of the program. Click analyze and then click run cleaner.

Surfsidekick can be responsible for installing a hidden infection on your machine....

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

Reboot back into normal mode.

Then run a panda scan for us again and post the results for us along with another HJT log and the log from along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Tim,

You have several entries similar to this:
O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = TBI.local

I assume this is a part of your internet provider, just let me know if that is accurate.

Looks like you may have installed another Antivirus....This can be a problem, because multiple AV's can conflict with one another and actually make you less effective against threats. I suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

If you decide to uninstall one of the AV's reboot afterward.

----------------

Now your log looks good right now after we got rid of that nasty rootkit infection :tazz:

I would like for you to run one final online scan:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post with another HJT log.

The tbi.local is something I have added so that is okay.

As for the antivirus programs I only have 1 running. The Norton is running with realtime protection and the others are inactive and not running.

Here is a new HJT log

Tim,

You are looking pretty good :)

Download Crap Cleaner from here or here.
Install and run it. The windows tab should be opened in the upper left of the program. Click analyze and then click run cleaner.

Navigate to this file and delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kblm6ev4.ini

Please look carefully at this post for some excellent preventative measures to take so you do not get infected again.
Prevention is good :tazz:

To reduce the re-infection potential for malware and protect yourself against spyware, here are a few helpful suggestions:
1. Keep Windows and Internet Explorer current with the latest critical security updates from Microsoft. This will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You CANNOT complete this update using an alternate browser.
http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us
http://www.microsoft.../ie/default.asp

2. Run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep its definitions up-to-date. If you are thinking about switching, there are a some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.
AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Avast: http://www.avast.com...ast_4_home.html

3. In addtion to using Ad-aware consider using another free malware scanning/removal program:
Adaware SE: http://www.download....ubj=dl&tag=top5
Spybot S&D: http://www.download....tml?tag=lst-0-1
MS Antispyware beta: http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

4. Consider using a free firewall if you are not already using one. Some good free ones are:
Sygate: http://smb.sygate.co...pf_standard.htm
Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs....n.jsp?lid=ho_za

5. Consider using an alternate free browser for general web surfing but you must use IE for windows update.
Mozilla Firefox: http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

6. Consider increasing your browser security by using these programs:
SpywareGuard will protect your homepage from being hijacked: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
SpywareBlaster will increase browser protection by blocking hundreds of known malware sites by adding them to IE's restricted sites zone. Download it here: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

If you use SpywareBlaster, you can also use a customblocklist to add even more entries into IE restricted sites zone. Go to this site for the current list and how to use instructions: http://customblockinglist.cjb.net/

IE-SPYAD is similar in that it adds thousands more known malware sites to IE's restricted zone. Download it here:
https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

*Remember just like your primary anti-virus software, it is important to keep all of these programs up-to-date and use them on a regular basis.
