Hello,

I've got something very malicious on my computer. I know for a fact it came in through an email attachment. It was cleverly disguised from a legitimate website I get product data from. Thinking it was my regristration for the website I clicked it and now I have a mess. My machine is spamming emails at an incredible rate. Symantec keeps swatting them down but they continually pop up.

I scanned the original email that came in and then scanned the attachment which indicated no danger. The file was encrypted so that virus scanning was ineffective. I have run spybot s&d and it removed a whole host of things 79 in all but the spamming still continues. Adaware did not find much, only tracking cookies. I tried to create a Hijackthis log and it seems like the program will not run. It immediately pops to a small message saying "No spyware, trojans or viruses found" "OK"... the program does not launch to the screen I'm normally viewing to execute a scan. Could the infection be blocking Hijackthis from running?

Thanks for any help,

Unclemuck

Hey UncleMuck and Welcome to GeekstoGo.

Dont worry about the PM.

Im about to head out for work and wont be back in until late this evening.

In the meantime,Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingc...es/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder

As you suggested, try running HijackThis in Safe Mode and see what happens.

Restart Normal and Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Post back with the Results of the Kaspersky Online Scanner-> the WinPFind log and a HijackThis log if it worked in Safe Mode.

I have to agree, something is very strange and I wanna see what it is.

I need you to upload some files for me please.

Go to the site below
http://www.thespykil...1e01a&board=1.0

Read the instructions for uploading files.

I need to see the entire contents of this folder please--> C:\WINDOWS\WinSecurity

Upload every file you see in that folder.

I also need a look at this Text file as well---> C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\helpwith elitum.txt

Please do the best you can to get me as much material uploaded as possible, this way we stand a better chance of clearing things up for you.

Post back with the Kaspersky results and confirm what you were able to upload.

I'm having a little trouble getting the Kaspersky scan to run. I dont have administrator privelages on this machine and the IT person is not available.

More information for you:

Whatever invaded my machine had the W32.sober.x@MM virus as the payload. On startup today I had a message splash at windows startup that said "Winsecurity services could not launch" etc etc...
The other day when I posted the problem my computer was spamming messages with the virus as payload out to numerous emails repeatedly. Today it has not done that at all. Not sure what stopped it, perhaps the previous cleanings I did with AVG, Spydot S&D, adaware etc. Although I distinctly remember it still doing it after I ran those... I'm confused about that.

I ran Symantecs Sober Removal tool today with windows restore off and it removed 17 instances of the virus.
The spamming has stopped.

Thank You for being so descriptive in all these details.

See if you can locate and delete this file---> C:\WINDOWS\mnrnn.dll]

Go ahead and Delete---> C:\WINDOWS\WinSecurity

Download the Hoster from here:
http://www.funkytoad...load/hoster.zip
Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK"
Exit Program

Go back to safe mode and scan again with WinPFind and post those results.

I performed the requested tasks. The winPFind safe mode scan is as follows:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

OK Crete good news I finally had luck with the Kaspersky scan. It started doing all of the mapped drives on our network and I felt that that was not necessary as it was a local infection on my machine. If that is presumptious to assume it did not go to the other drives I will do it another time as it is a multi hour process for sure. It picked up on the sober viruses, which I had thought the symantec removal tool had addressed, perhaps these are only quarantined items. Does Kaspersky remove/delete/quarantine, or just identify?

I could not find the file omsmm.dll

The reg edit worked flawlessly.

Crete, I do not recognize that file.

such a small world, I did a google search for it and you came up in the only link it served up:

http://forums.thetec...ead.php?p=59662

Seems as if it surfaced before.

maybe my administrator can identify it but I cannot.

Thanks

Hi Crete!

After conferring with my administrator, the file does not belong on this machine. The file was for a virtual network application that is not intended to be run from this machine. We are surmising that the virus could have installed it for a potential backdoor entry to sieze control of this machine. We are free and clear of Sober for now, the spamming has been stopped and all anomalies from the infection have been cleared.

Thanks again for all your help, you guys perform such an invaluable service.

An additional note:

There was actually a series of files that were associated with it as well as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCZLIB.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FLASH.OCX
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCDISPLAY.OCX
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCHOOKS.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCOMNITHREAD_RT.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCPROXY.OCX
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCSERVER.OCX
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCTUNNEL.OCX
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WEBCVIEWER.OCX

These were deleted to the recycle bin until we are absolutely certain they are not sustaining an application we were unaware of.
