Music Loudness Variations from Sound System

While playing music on the PC (music track was read from HD) I noticed the sound level varied in loudness. Up one split second, down the next. It's not characterized as a sudden increase/decrease of level, but rather just as if you'd adjust the volumn. I'm playing a song that I like and I set it so it repeats.

What could be the cause of this?
