Window explorer keeps freezing

All of the sudden I can't connect to the internet (cable modem), and any program I open of the desktop causes the windows explore to freeze. Alt+cntrl+del shows explorer(not responding), then when I close explorer, I get a message that "shellexp" with a big red X, class is not registered, whatever the heck that is??? Any clue what the problem is?
