My girlfriend's parent's computer has started acting up by displaying the following message just after you click on a user name at start-up (windows XP):
Explorer.exe - application error. The application failed to initialize (error 0xc0000005).
You have to click on OK twice and then start explorer.exe using new task from the task manager.
It only started doing it after I had uninstalled NORTON anti-virus and installed Mcafee Virusscan enterprise V8.1 & ad-aware 1.06. Norton had expired. I had to go online to update mcafee which it did successfully.
After I re-booted after all updates then the above error appeared.
I installed ewido and ran a full updated scan along with ad-aware pro 1.06 and a mcafee anti-virus check. This removed a lot of items (not sure when ad-aware was run last, NO viruses though). After the ewido scan, the computer functioned correctly, not displaying the error message at boot-up. This was okay for two days and now tonight, the error message is back.
I ran ewido again and it finds a trace of ISTBar which it can't remove due to some sort of error. I can't recall whether it found this two days ago. I ran the ISTbar fix from Symantec but it did not find any files relating to the worm.
Two days ago I saved a hijackthis log and I was wondering if someone would be able to help me?
