Hello,

I recently acquired the spyaxe malware, I seemed to have removed it following the generic uninstall.zip found on some other posts with the same problem. No longer get the blinking red circle/white X in the system tray, but I do get a yellow warning sign with with an exclamation point with a popup that states: "System Alert: Adware & Spyware -- Your computer performance slowed down..." as one of them, and others along the lines of "spyware found ...". IE also redirects to updateyoursystem.com. MS-AntiSpyware and CA PestPatrol find nothing. Any help to get these annoying popups gone would greatly be appreciated.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Download SpyAxeFix.exe © noahdfear. Save it to your desktop.

Close all other programmes and windows. Double click SpyAxeFix.exe, then click Start to extract the tool to it's own folder.

Open the SpyAxeFix folder and double click the SpyAxeFix.bat to start the tool. At one point when the tool runs, your taskbar will dissappear, and your computer will restart when the tool completes.

A text file named spyaxe.txt will be created in the SpyAxeFix folder. Post the contents of that log please.

Please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
  
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs in total required)

Thank you for the quick reply!

Everything went according to the directions given, IE is no longer hijacked and I don't get that annoying popup in the systray anymore! I do get the CA AV popping up with a Win32.DlStwoyle virus everytime now, and I still get the occasional popup in IE with what seems to be authentic windows messages/options, but they are not.

I was perhaps too confident on the last fix being the last, however you still have one Trojan to remove. Let's have a go with this:

Download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Thanks for replying... I've done the above instructions, I've been browsing/working on the PC (~20 minutes), no popups, no IE hijack and no annoying sys. tray icons or spyware redirects. I still do get the virus popup though, even though my AV won't pick it up on full scan. Any suggestions you have to offer, I'm all ears! I did a search after deleting that mssearchnet.exe file with the program, and I came up with:

I understand what is happening. BTW your HJT log looks good.

The three locations that are showing up on your AV scan is an empty folder, a prefetch file and the Killbox backup.

Delete them all. Do a search for mssearchnet and delete anything with that name.

Now the other instance is a temporary file residing in your system32 folder. Let's flush it out.

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

I've followed the instructions, all turned out good, except it turns out there's 1 file in the %temp% location I can't delete, I've rebooted twice and tried, the name of the file changes, but it remains "in use, impossible to delete". I do still get the CA AV popups for the win32.Distwoyle virus, and it seems to constantly originate from \system32\1024\ . I'm open to trying anything you can scheme up to remove this annoying virus, even if it's risky or something you want to experiment with!

Let's try this:

Download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mscornet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ld57F.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Id57F.tmp

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Any better? I am hoping this is not a rootkit, but we may have to explore that possibility.

I followed the instructions, KillBox would only recognize the .exe, not the .tmp files and only deleted mscornet.exe. Rebooted and it's working great, no AV popups or anything, I did do another Activescan to be sure, it came up with another file though,

I'm wondering about doing a Kaspersky scan with extended databases. If you are game, please visit Kaspersky for an online scan. Please select extended in the scan settings to access this option, and you will find it to be the second option from the top.

I KillBox'd the file, rebooted, did another Activescan, came up with another different file as being infected now.

I did the Kaspersky scan as you instructed and it came back with 6 viruses and 14 infected files.

Hello again

The three scanners agree on the bad file, it being the TMP extension. Kaspersky has identified the mIRC also, I think largely on the basis that most of them are infected. It really depends on whether you use mIRC. If you don't, we can just get rid of it, however if it is a programme that you use, let's give the file to Kaspersky to test and be guided by their decision. And then the warning from ActiveScan.

The other files highlighted by Kaspersky are in the System Restore, which will be deleted when we are sure that your PC is clean, so we can ignore those until then.

So these are the three files for deletion. You can boot to safe mode and remove them manually, or you can Killbox them. It looks to me like the TMP file is changing with each reboot, so probably better to do a manual delete, but make sure you have details of the correct file in use at the time..

I'd like you to run a rootkit scanner to see if this is a really deep infection.

Download:
RKFiles.zip

Create a new folder called C:\Antispyware\RKFiles

Extract the contents of RKFiles.zip into this new RKFiles folder.

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Open the C:\Antispyware\RKFiles folder * Locate and double-click the RKFILES.BAT to run this tool.
* Sit back and wait until it has finished.
* When it is finally finished a text file will open.
* Save the contents of that text file.

N.B.: It should save by default to C:\Log.txt

Reboot back to Normal Mode.
