Let me start from the beginning. We are running windows 98. I am trying to help my boss fix his computer. His complaint originally was he could not get to his home page which was msn. The msn passport login page kept coming up. Even if you changed it in internet options it would still go back to the login page. The second problem noticed was popups whether you had the browser running or not. The first thing I realized is he had no antivirus installed. I went out and got AVG's free version and loaded it. I have installed spyware blaster and all ready had spybot destroyer and ad aware. My boss said he found the file lexplore.exe which is supposed to be caused by the sodabot worm. I was originally going to post about the lexplore.exe but after reading your info and what to do first I followed your directions. I enabled all start up programs through msconfig. I ran spybot destroyer, ad aware, avg and another spy program that he paid for and I can't remember the name of. I did all of this in safe mode. During the ad aware scan a diaglog box popped up that read:
Microsoft Visual C++ /runtime library
program C:\windows\explorer.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
I closed it in safe mode and finished running all of the programs. When I tried to restart windows the box popped up again so I clicked ok now the system just hangs and won't load windows. So I can't go and get a copy of the Hijack this log file. I am at my wits end with this mess. Can you help?

Yes, I can boot into safe mode. I was finally able to get the highjack this log file. It should be attached if I did it right.

Yes, that is the entire file and yes I do still have Ad Aware installed. I just went back out to that computer and it was full of pop ups. I can't hardly get on the Internet because of the pop ups. By the way, what is the keyboard shortcut to close all windows. I can't remember what it is but it would sure be helpful when trying to close all of those popup windows.

Lets see if this turns something up for us,

Please download L2m9xfix here:
http://swandog46.gee...om/l2m9xfix.exe

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

I did not find the file jpelflib.exe however I did find and delete the file nfomon.exe
This message came up for both spnstart.exe and SetACT.exe

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

Hi Don,
I ran JHT and deleted the two files. I restarted but still have pop ups. I will complete your instructions as soon as I can get back on that computer. They are using it right now. Talk to you soon.
