My wife was promped to download Winfix, when she clicked on thelink lots of virus alams went off. I spent a while updating virus scanners and removing them. The next day, I couldn't connect to the internet, my computer would not detect my mocem. I went to the Device manager, and it came up empty. I can't detect or install the modem. In safe mode, Device manager works and the modem is detected.

any help would be appreciated.
here is the log.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Stop Potentially Runnning Processes
Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\WINDOWS\wt\updater\wcmdmgr.exe

Potential Uninstallations
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Start HijackThis Fix
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://82/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wcmdmgr] C:\WINDOWS\wt\updater\wcmdmgrl.exe -launch

------The following are optional fixes that may save some system resources------
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] "C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" "/background"

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

File/Folder Deletions
Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\wt\

Generating a Startup List
  • Double click on HijackThis.exe to run it.
  • Go to Config || Misc Tools
  • Check the two Boxes to the Right of the button labelled "Generate StartupList Log"
  • Click the button labelled "Generate StartupList Log"

I am getting that error, but I think I know what it is. I think it is a daemon tools window. I will uninstall it and see if it goes away. It might be time to get a new CD emulator.

Thank you for all of you help. I couldn't have done it without you.

Preventative Measures
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?.

Also Consider...
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 4 free ones available for personal use:How is she running now? Any further problems? If not, Good work, and Happy Computing!
