Hello again Larry

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have just one piece of malware that I can see. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and remove the guard option. You may be required to reboot in order to complete the change.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. Have the adverts stopped and serenity returned?

There is only one individual setting, I performed all functions that you suggested and there are still advertisments and banners in Weather Bug and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Here is a new log, I do Thank you very much for your help, will be waiting for your answer.

Hello again Larry

The early Weather Bug was renowned for advertising pop-ups, but later versions are meant to be OK. I wonder!

I note that Ewido Guard is still active. This programme will stop changes being made to your registry. Plus disable the guard option as described in my previous post.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:AproposFix
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode.

Download:
RKFiles.zip

Create a new folder called C:\Antispyware\RKFiles

Extract the contents of RKFiles.zip into this new RKFiles folder.

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Open the C:\Antispyware\RKFiles folder * Locate and double-click the RKFILES.BAT to run this tool.
* Sit back and wait until it has finished.
* When it is finally finished a text file will open.
* Save the contents of that text file.

N.B.: It should save by default to C:\Log.txt

Reboot back to Normal Mode.

Post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder and the Log.txt as described above.

We are not dealing with a rootkit according to the scan results, but whatever it is, it is invisible.

Let's just be safe and look very deeplyinto your system. If this is negative, I will start making adjustments to your HJT log until the advertising stops.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

To bring you from the begining, The computer was very slow on startup and shutdown. I had been using the Norton internet package. I had no advertisments on the weather bug, or internet explorer. I was advised to remove Norton, as it would slow down the computer, this I did. Since I removed it and added Zone Alarm and AVG Free, I have had advertisments, waving banners coming across the screen and they are annoying. Maybe we are looking for the wrong thing, or I should just put Norton back on the computer. What does Norton have that the others are missing? I will wait for your reply, before I do what you asked in your last suggestion.

I'm sure that the Norton AV has nothing to do with the problem. AVG is an excellent AV and the waving banners are not normal behaviour.

This is a typical malware problem, but not all malware is easily visible, hence the need for specialist scanners.

When you uninstalled Norton, did you get rid of all traces? You can check this by using Search, remember to have it set up to check hidden folders, and look for Norton, NAV and symantec. I will admit that I am not a fan of Norton and I have always found it to be a tricky programme to uninstall.

Hello and I am back again. I read on the Norton Internet Security 2005 box, that the program will reduce screen clutter by blocking online ads. What takes its place now that I have removed the program? If it is Ad-Aware SE Personal Free Version, there is no AD watch with the free version, maybe I need to purchase the full version? I also have the free version of AVG and ZoneAlarm. I am using Norton Password Manager and if there is another Password Manager, other than Norton, I would be willing to download it and use it, then I can eliminate Norton completely. I did the search of all files and hidden files and folders looking for Norton, NAV and symantec, I did find a few files with these names, but most were either Norton Passwore Manager or just shortcuts, which I eliminated. Hello again Larry

I can understand you wanting a password manager and I am sure there are plenty of them available for free. What sprung to mind when I was reading that is why not do yourself the greatest favour ever and stop using Microsoft Internet Explorer and switch to Mozilla Firefox instead. It is much safer than MSIE and it has its own built in password manager and a built in pop-up blocker too. It is very similar in appearance to MSIE. Anyway that is something for you to ponder.

Looking at the WinPfind log, there are a couple of bad files that must be deleted.

Please download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
• Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Thank You for your help, it seems as if there is a lot of un-needed stuff on my computer. I downloaded Killbox and deleted the two files you asked me to delete. The advertisment is still on the Weather Bug, and cannot see any change in Microsoft Internet Explorer. I am going to load Mozilla Firefox now and give it a try. Will let you know how it works out.
