I've used Spybot S&D, Adaware, Xoftspy, Norton Antivirus, CWShredder, AVG, Ewido, Tweaknow Reg Cleaner, Cache Cleaner, and a few others. I still get this stuff, it's relentless. I got stuff out of the registry, handpicked many suspicious files from system folders, etc. It got some of it, but there's still popups on whatever browser is set to my default, doesn't matter which browser it is.

popunder.paypopup.com and such... can javaware do this?

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

first of all, thank you very much. this is annoying, and really slowing down my home research on a current car project i have going on.

I ran #1, it said "system cannot find the specified file" for a quick second, and then ran the log and popped up the text file. so i ran option #5, ran #1 again, and nothing changed. nevertheless, here is the log.

anyone got a link to some info on this VX2 virus/trojan/whatever?

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then it will ask for a password enter bye (lowercase) then hit enter. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot.After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

Your log is clean

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

I use all of those programs except for the hosts file contributions, not to mention a couple others that I'll install and run if I start having problems such as this, so I don't know how I got infected.
