Hello,

Yesterday a series of icons about gambling, dating, pharmacy appeared on my desktop. Each time the mouse gets near them, a "Loading..." message appears next to them for just a moment and then dissappears. However the icons remain there, no matter how hard I try to remove them.
I have updated and repeatedly used Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy, cwShredder, eido security, trojan hunter and cleanup 4.0 with no luck. Most of them find and remove spyware and trojan horses every time I run them but the icons in question remain there!
My last attempt was running Ad-Aware and Spybot once more, then rebooting and finally running HijackThis as instructed. Both HijackThis and eido security suite reports are below.
Could you please help me with this?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome spra to Geeks to Go!

Please remove UnSpyPC:
Move to Start > Settings > Control Panel
Double click Add/Remove Programs.
Within Add/Remove programs click the "Install/Uninstall" tab or click the "Change or Remove Programs" button.
Within this section you will see a listing of programs that are currently installed that support this feature. If the program I’m advising you to uninstall is listed within this list, highlight it and click the Add/Remove or uninstall option or button.

***

Download the Killbox version 2.0.0.473 .
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\system32\idemlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxod.exe
C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC\UnSpyPC.exe

For these files, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Hello q2i2r4,

Thank you so much for assisting me!
I followed your instructions.

1. Killbox found just one of the three files to delete.
2. Hijackthis did not find all the entries you listsed. It did find all of the 017 .... ones however!
3. I ran ewido and found one cookie (follwing the hijackthis report below).
4. I re-ran hijackthis and this time it did find two of the files you described (see below)

I didn't try to eliminate them this time, because you have not instructed me so.

So here are the reports:

Let's see what we can find:
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from notepad into your post
***

In HijackThis:
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmwjx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmwjx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [desktop] C:\WINDOWS\system32\idemlog.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [UnSpyPC] "C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC\UnSpyPC.exe

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Run the Panda free use Active Scan.
You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here.
Along with the uninstall list and the Panda report, post me a fresh HijackThis log to check.

Thank you!

By mistake I FIRST scanned my HD with ActiveScan and THEN I ran HiJackThis.
Maybe this was the reason why I only found 2 of the 3 files you mentioned.
I found only

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [desktop] C:\WINDOWS\system32\idemlog.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [UnSpyPC] "C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC\UnSpyPC.exe

and I fixed them.
I did not find

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmwjx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmwjx.exe

Maybe it was fixed by ActiveScan.
Anyway the ActiveScan text and the fresh HiJackThis report are below:

Still a bit left, but it would have been there even if you did all in the order I posted :tazz:

I see you have Spybot 1.2 there. The current version is 1.4
You can remove 1.2 using the software panel.

***

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\GatorPdpLoudInstaller.log
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsdv.exe

For these files, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

Update Ewido to the latest definitions and let it scan.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Reboot again and post me the Ewido log and a fresh HijackThis log.

I think I did it correctly this time.
Please find the two logs below.

I have a question though.
I noticed that those system restoration files being saved automatically by Windows, seem quite vulnerable? Also I am not sure if they have ever saved me from a bad situation. Furthermore, they must take up much space and maybe slow down the system?
So I would really need your opinion on this. Do you think I should stop this feature?
Do you have something else to suggest? Also do you think I should keep active all of those anti-spy, anti-adware, anti-virus programs we used? Some will expire soon anyway.

Thanks very much again!
Your help is highly appreciated!

System Restore creates a safe place for you to return to when needed. The other option (when you turn this off) is to format and re-install. It's not a vulnerability.

This malware you have there is changing names each time.

Let's see if we can find out what's keeping it alive:
Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

I consulted Cretemonster and Miekemoes (Thank you for helping out, :tazz: ).

Download FixWareout.

Save it to your desktop and run the fixwareout setup file.
Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan,

check and fix the O4 starting with dm*.exe

In your latest HijackThis log it looked like this, but it will have changed again:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmujc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmujc.exe

click OK to proceed.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

These are the mistakes I did this time:

1. I ran fixwareout etc. which found something. But I thought I would be able to find its log somewhere on my HD.

2. Then I ran Hijackthis and found two 04... dm*.exe files which I fixed. But when I fixed them Spybot displayed a message that a reg entry is being changed and asked me if I want to allow it.
Unfortunately the new Spybot does not display the button's captions correctly (maybe this is a bug in the Greek translation only?). So I pressed one of them hoping I am pressing the correct one. It was not. So Spybot did not allow a correct change! Then it displayed a new message about a second reg entry and this time I pressed the other (correct) button of course. So one entry remained bad. Not exactly my fault this one..

3. Then I thought I should do the whole thing all over again. And that's what I did.
This time fixwareout didn't find anything and so I thought I should close it and search for its previous log file. But when I did, I realized that this log file had replaced the old interesting one! Sorry!

4. So, this time Hihjackthis found one bad entry only. I fixed that and re-ran Hijackthis and saved the following log. It doen't seem to contain any dm*.exes anymore, but who knows. Next time I reboot or connect to the Internet I may find a dozen files waiting for me!

Thank you for your time and effort! My special thanks to Cretemonster and Miekemoes as well!

The new fixwareout and hijackthis logs are below

Cretemonster thanks a lot.

Can you please tell me what happened? You did delete that one, didn't you?

Is this a question for me? If it is, the answer is I have deleted the last two files found.
I am really not sure of what is left over - if any!
I will go to bed now - it's very late in Athens - and tomorrow I will reboot and check again.

Thank you all. You are great!
Goodnight!

PS. Crete monster, surely you are human but are you from Crete if I may ask?
