I have run McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware, AD-aware, Spybot: search and destroy, and Hijack This. I have been able to clean several things, however I am consistantly getting a gambling popup as well as pop ups for Adult Friend Finder and anti-spyware. Also, I get a yellow icon in my toolbar with an explamation saying I have spyware and clicking on it directs me to a website selling anti-spyware. One comon problem is that Spybot keeps finding Smitfraud-C even after it says it has deleted it, and I run the scan immediately after I delete it. Also, I have tried deleting the 02-BHO in the Hijack this list, but it keeps coming back even after it says it is deleted. Please help me.

Welcome Ruprect to Geeks to Go!

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

***

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive.
Please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it.

***

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Reverse the process when you’ve carried out the advise.

***

Please disable SpybotSD’s protection, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Close Spybot.

***

Please also disable McAfee Antispyware.

***

Please download noahdfear's smitRem.exe©. Save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

***

Please download the trial version of ewido security suite.Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button

The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

***

Update AdAware SE 1.06 to the latest definitions.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7caf96a2-c556-460a-988e-76fc7895d284} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp46EC.tmp

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

***

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

***

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your computer.

***

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

***

Reboot back into Windows

Post a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Thank you very much for your help. I tried my best to follow all of your instructions, however, I do not believe I have the Microsoft Anti-Spyware. If so, I could not find it. Also, I ran Hijack this, but forgot to delete the 02- BHO. But, the otehr steps seemed to delete it. When I realized I forgot, I repeated the process but there was no BHO listed the second go around. Here are my saved files:

You are right, it was mcafee antispyware, sorry about that.

Sofar the logs look good.

Let's do a scan to make sure:

Run the Panda free use Active Scan.
You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan. You will also have to allow this site to popup.
  • Click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here.

Well, I have not had the same type of things happen; haven't had anything happen. But it did find the following:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/ist.istbar Not disinfected C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Totem Shared
Adware:Adware/IWon Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\iwonslot1,0,2,5.inf

Please remove this file: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\iwonslot1,0,2,5.inf

and

this folder:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Totem Shared.

Reboot the computer.

You can rescan using Panda to see if it's clean now. Do let me know what it says.

Silly is not asking and pretending you did what I asked..

Asking a question is always good, that way you learn :tazz:

Rightclick on the folder or file, a menu will appear. Choose delete.

I can not find the folder or file. I tried looking in windows explorer and they are not showing up as listed. Panda does not seem to let me delete them from their site. Can you be a bit more specific?

Try it this way:

Go to start - run
type:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\ and press enter
A new window will appear.

Look for
Totem Shared

Right click that folder and choose 'delete'.

***

Download the Killbox version 2.0.0.473 .
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\iwonslot1,0,2,5.inf
Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

Now rerun Panda Active Scan and safe the report when it is done.

Post me the report to check.

Hmmm, well, I did the above. Seemed to have a bit of a problem getting killbox to work, but here is what reads now from Panda:

Reboot to safe mode.

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {7caf96a2-c556-460a-988e-76fc7895d284} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp517B.tmp

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Rerun Runthis.bat

***

Reboot back to normal mode.

Post me a fresh HijackThis log and the smitfiles.txt
