Help With Div Layers

In the process of designing a personal website I'm going to venture off and create, I need help with div layers! I looked at a few tutorials but they're all very confusing. I tried doing a little bit with them but they didn't turn out the way I wanted them to. When I did a second div layer, the first one disappeared.

Any tutorials, etc. would be very helpful
