Hi:

My Windows 98SE system is progressively getting slower and worse. It started with IE not opening with message "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close". I followed the error message to the MS website and downloaded the "fix", with no luck. I have reinstalled IE6 SP1 twice--no luck. I tried from the Control Panel to repair IE--no luck. The system is now very slow to startup, hangs on programs it never hung up on before, does not always find the CD drive in Windows Explorer, etc. I have to start IE through clicking on the desktop icon in Windws Explorer.

I have done everything in your "start here" list, plus running Spyware Doctor and McAffee VS. I ran WinPatrol and saw some programs running that seemed to have no good purpose and I've now disabled, including: glgded.exe, kbkf.exe, hyat.exe, irtt.exe. None of this has really helped.

I have no idea what to do from here and am preparing to throw the computer through the window. Any help would be great. HJT log follows:

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run directly from your desktop or a temp directory. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Once you have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Your log looks pretty clean. Let's take a closer look at things.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

OK, I downloaded WinPFind and tried to run it three times, overnight twice and during the day once--for a max time of more than 12 hours. It never finished so I never got a log.

Messages that came up each time were as follows:

------CHecking Selected Standard Folders----------

Checking -SystemDrive- folder....

FSG! 3/19/05 11:01:08 RH 215068022 C:\W98UNDO.DAT
PEC2 3/19/05 11:01:08 RH 215068022 C:\W98UNDO.DAT
PTech 3/19/05 11:01:08 RH 215068022 C:\W98UNDO.DAT

That's it.

Let's try this instead.

Open Hijackthis, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
Next to "Generate StartupList log", place a check next to "List also minor sections" (full) and "List empty sections (complete).
Then click "Generate StartupList log"
Click "Yes" to the box that pops-up.
Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears to this topic.

Still not showing me anything.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:

Because of the problem I'm having with IE, I cannot launch the on-line scan--unless you know a way.

My IE problem prevents the system from opening a second window. For example, I can't left click on a link, I have to right clink and copy link into address line on the top of the screen. The on-line scan button does not show a link and when I left click, IE gives me an error.

I also tried downloading and installing another version of the Kaspersky software, but it says the install may cause conflicts with the McAffee system I already have in place and I need to uninstall first. I have not done this.

Thoughts?

Let's try this instead.

Please download Bit Defender 8 Free Edition
  • Install the program and then follow the prompts to download all available updates.
  • Perform a full scan on your Local drive.
  • When the scan is complete save the log and post it back here in your next reply.
It should get along with Mcafee.

So that showed us a few things, but unfortunately I don't think it's the cause of your problems.

Delete this file.

C:\bpc_inst_1014.exe

Then open up Outlook Express and double delete those emails that BitDefender identified as being infected.

Reboot and let me know how your computer is running now.

I double deleted the files but there is no difference in system performance.

I didn't really think it would, but at least now you know you are clean of malware.
I don't believe malware is the cause of your problems. You may have a hardware problem, possibly memory going bad, but let's try one more thing to restore any missing or corrupted system files.

Follow the instructions here to reinstall Windows 98 over top of your current installation. You shouldn't lose anything by doing this, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to back up anything that you can't afford to lose.

Let me know how it goes.

OK, I reinstalled Windows 98SE per instructions. Then I used the repair option on the control panel for IE (never worked before when I tried).

IE now fires up somewhat normally, but slow. It may give similar errors as before during screen changes, but it keeps going.

Overall, the system is still extremely slow on start up, program loading, etc. WIndows Explorer does not recognize the internal CD drive or the zip drive--it does find the floppy and the external cd R/W. Other ideas?
