Hi, I'm paranoid about a keylogger having been installed in my pc and just want to play it safe. I already ran Spybot and Ad-aware with nothing, and I have AVG and ZoneAlarm as well. I also searched download.com for an anti-keylogger, but there seems to be no good one with positive reviews at the moment. Can anyone recommend me a good one, or take a peek at my HJT log for a keylogger or other malware please? Thanks a bunch!

Hi and welcome to Geeks. :tazz:

Sorry about the long wait for a reply, we've been pretty busy around here.

You have a few entries which need to be removed but as it's been nearly a week since you posted your log, can I ask you to post another please in this thread and we'll take it from there.

What makes you think you have a keylogger?

Can you tell me what you know about these running processes please:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jennilyn\Desktop\BOTS!!!\boost2\start.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jennilyn\Desktop\BOTS!!!\des2\start.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jennilyn\Desktop\BOTS!!!\~[]ethan_Jr.[]~\start.exe

Hi, thanks for the reply :tazz: .

Yep, I know those processes, and they're kinda related to my keylogger paranoia as well. They're some programs my brother uses for a game he plays, a game in which many users were rumored to have been hacked because of players' usernames and passwords having been keylogged through programs sent in emails, even in pictures etc. The thing is that my parents use this PC to log into their banking sites as well, and it would be a disaster if their account information were logged and hacked into as well.

Here's the fresh HJT log, if there are other things that need to be removed, please tell me! Thanks a lot!

Ok, let's remove a few entries and run a few tests for you.

If you have the free version of Flashget, please include all the associated entries below which I'm marked for removal.

Step 1

Configure Windows to Show all hidden files & folders and ensure you're familiar with rebooting into Safe Mode.

Download and install System Security Suite.

Step 2

Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

O2 - BHO: ts - {4006DCA3-433D-4FC8-AC36-42DA7797DCB7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\bho.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download All by FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_all.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download using FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_link.htm
O9 - Extra button: FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: &FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
O16 - DPF: {75D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} - http://secure2.comne...iveSecurity.cab
O23 - Service: SpywareCleanerService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SCService.exe (file missing)

Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS/BROWSERS and click Fix Checked

Step 3

Reboot into Safe Mode and use Windows Explorer to locate & delete the following file/folders in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bho.dll

C:\Program Files\FlashGet\
C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\<--untrustworthy anti-spyware program

Step 4

Close ALL other windows and open System Security Suite.
  • On the Items to Clear tab select Cookies & Temporary Files under Internet Explorer.
  • Select Temporary Files & Recycle Bin under My Computer.
  • Press the Clear Selected Items button.
  • Restart the machine when prompted.

Step 5

Then run either of the following online virus scans with Internet Explorer (saving the scan report when complete):

Kaspersky On-line Scanner
  • Accept the Active X object and download the latest definitions.
  • When the scanner is ready, click Scan Settings.
  • Select the Extended anti-virus database.
  • Select Scan Archives & Scan Mail Bases and then ok.
  • Click My Computer to run a full system scan.
  • When complete, choose Save as Text and save the log to your desktop.
Panda ActiveScan
  • Once on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button and then the Check Now button on the nex screen.
  • Enter your details in the required fields.
  • Then click the big Scan Now button.
  • Allow the Active X component to install and download the necessary files. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
  • Upon scan completion, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Step 6

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log with the online scan results please.

If you're concerned about those files I questioned, upload them for analysis at Jotti's Malware Scanner.

Just paste the full filepaths into the box at the top of the page and hit Submit.

It will check the files against numerous anti-virus databases from different vendors.

C:\Documents and Settings\Jennilyn\Desktop\BOTS!!!\boost2\start.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jennilyn\Desktop\BOTS!!!\des2\start.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jennilyn\Desktop\BOTS!!!\~[]ethan_Jr.[]~\start.exe

Let me know the results if they detect anything.

Hi, finally I finished all the instructions :) :woot: .

Step 3
I only found and deleted
C:\Program Files\FlashGet\
The other files aren't there.

Step 5
The scanner just detects the viruses but doesn't clean them?! :)

Correct, Kaspersky only detects. It has an extremely deep scanner though and rarely misses a trick. :tazz:

Please remove this entry with HijackThis:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://download.game...aploader_v6.cab

Then reboot into safe mode and delete the following files in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\Adult_Chat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mm63.ocx

Delete all temp & temporary files:
  • Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr in the run box.
  • Checkmark ONLY Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin.
  • Click OK to start the cleanup and wait for it to finish
  • Then click Start > Run, and type %temp% and press OK
  • Click Edit > Select All > Edit > Delete
Reboot back to normal mode and run Kaspersky again if you want final confirmation that you're clean.

Then post a fresh HJT log and let me know how the machine is running please. :)

Note:

*Items detected as Infected: not-a-virus:Client-IRC.Win32.mIRC are not harmful. Kaspersky is just telling you that these programs are a risk to use.

* Items detected which start with C:\System Volume Information\_restore are infected System Restore points and are not harmful unless you use System Restore to revert the machine to an earlier restore point.
