After some minutes-10+, Firefox quits quits, "url not found". IE may still work for a bit longer, then it quits. MS Outlook still works, but eventually that can't access the internet. Have run Spybot, Acronis, AVG, MS spyware=no malware detected. Zonealarm Pro is not set for autolock. Repairing internet connection through control panel has no effect. Reboot PC=all is ok for a while. System is XP Home with SP2 and auto updates all done. Am on cable modem with Road Runner, modem indicator lights show good connectin. Could a recent patch from Microsoft be involved?
NOTE: Problem appears to be solved. Apparently the browser could not access the ISP's DNS after some time had elapsed. Zonealarm was blocking. Put DNS IP into trusted zone. Have had no problem for over a week.
